Law and Order episode question

I've been watching the reruns on TNT and the last episode that my DVR recorded started out with the 2 cops and 2 lawyers watching a rapist-murderer get a lethal injection. Then it just shows how all 4 handle what happened.

My question is at the end, Brisco(e)? and the female lawyer (brunette with short hair) get t-boned and Briscoe gets out of the car and starts crying when he sees the lawyer. Was she dead?????????????

What's interesting is that many fans refused to believe she was dead (at first) because it was never stated explicitly. Only a few seasons later did the writers explicitly state that in an episode which also stated that she and McCoy had sexual relations.

I have to admit that was about the most sudden exit of a character that I've ever seen.

I think that moment was comedy for most people since no one liked his character.

I remember watching that episode as a rerun on A&E a few years ago when they were showing Law & Order 4 times a day. My roommate and I had never seen it and when we saw the ending we were in shocked disbelief.
