I was at Costco today and they have GEM Electric Cars on sale. The two passenger one goes for $3999.99. This lists for $6995. You also get a 10% Federal Tax Credit which makes it $3599.99. The also sell the 4 passenger and the short/long bed versions for similar discounts. These cars are made by a subsidary of DaimlerChrysler and are street legal. I only wish I had a place to plug one in. Maybe I can recharge it for free when I visit Fry's. They have those electric car chargers in front.

Here's a link to GEM cars.

what makes it street legal is a certain amount of horsepower and lights, and stuff

I agree on the 25 MPH. What street are they talking about? I've driven forklifts that are faster!

It says it can be driven on streets posted at 35mph and less.

Currently, 37 states have passed legislation accepting the National Highway and Safety Administrations ruling on Low Speed Vehicles, allowing vehicles to be driven on roads that are posted at 35 miles per hour or less. The NEV has a maximum allowable speed of 25 mph.

You have to check and see if your state is one of them.

Not practical for where I live though.

I was hoping to see someone try to man handle it onto their cart. It was just sitting in the warehouse next to the film. It got a lot of interest though.

I don't think my issue would be the speed of this thing, but the fact that I'd be beaten senseless when arriving at my destination. Nothing screams "beat me" more than tooling around in one of these.

Iwearnosox:

I take it you've never seen a ScootCar. They're kinda popular in Europe and they rent them out to European tourists here in San Francisco. That has the "beat me" title hands down over a GEM.

I like Hybrids, but don't discount electric. Remember the GM EV1 from years ago. They leased them at Saturn Dealerships. They went from 0-60 in about 7 seconds. That's fast. I still see a couple of guys commuting to work with these on the highway. The problem was that it was "leased" and it was way too expensive.

How are alternative cars going in the rest of the country? Here in San Francisco, Insights and Prius's are everywhere. I also see EV1s, the old Honda Electric Car ( I forget the Name ) and Ford Thinks. I wish I bought an Insight now, I got a WRX instead. I'm an evil carbon emitting polluter.

Got to love DaimlerChrysler, only they could make doors an optional accessory.

NHTSA requirements to qualify as a low-speed vehicle are that the vehicle must be equipped with automotive safety glass windshield, turn signals, mirrors, wiper blades, head and tail lights, and seatbelts.
The 'speedy' compact two-seater is rated at
Turf: 12-15 mph
Street: 23-25 mph

The model pictures on the web site are pretty poor. Only small 2x3" images.

Hmmm, $4000 for an electric riding mower that can't even cut grass is kinda pricey.
Is it at least possible to get a lawn mowing attachment for it?

At least you should go for the one at Hammacher Schlemmer. It can do 70mph. I've seen one on the freeway every now and then. In California, I think it would qualify for the single person carpool lane sticker as well since it's all electric. For all of you getting those penis extension spams, I think this is quite literally the ultimate penis extension.

I don't know... I can't picture any guy that would drive one of those things really having any need for a penis at all, much less a penis extension.
