"First lady Laura Bush showed off a new gold-rimmed set of official George W. Bush state china on Wednesday, with less than two weeks to use it before the family packs up for Texas."

While this really isn't presedent-setting, (Nancy Rayguns and Hillary Clinton also bought new china for the White House) the timing on this, especially in light of the current economy just makes this LOOK bad...

Almost a half a million $$$ for china...seems pretty elitist to me...😛

Well it's probably for a setting of a thousand. After 8 years I'm sure they were in need of some new China for State functions and that stuff is expensive, at least for quality China.

She said she was aware of criticism her predecessors received for buying expensive china, but said it was paid for with private money.

She was also careful to use U.S. companies Lenox Inc., and Pickard China to produce the plates.

I'd figure lefties would be happy.

According to the article its 320.
Considering how many times its liekly to be used each year I'm guessing new plates during each presidency are expected. Looks like it was privately funded too and a multiyear deal. Nothing to see here...larger issues to tackle...

I applaud the use of American companies...and I'll be surprised if the monies used haven't been used as tax deductions somewhere along the line...

Yeah, I think it was setting for 300+.

Hell, they's from Tex-Ass...Paper plates woulda been good enuf...😀

Like I said, it's more the timing of the event than anything that makes this look bad.

320 place settings, which is still a lot of china. Also paid for with private funds.

Still pretty expensive, but you can't expect the president to host other heads of state with Corelleware. 😉 Plus it has gold in it, so if the economy collapses Obama can melt it down and buy bread with the gold. 😛

Meh who cares, it was private money.

Might even be a taxpayer benefit if it stays in the WH for other Presidents etc to use (taxpayers won't need to pay).

Can't find a link, but last night's news said that some idiot in some department or another used about $350K of taxpayer money to renovate the private restroom in his government office.

$350,000 to renovate a freakin bathroom? WTH, you can buy a whole house for that kind of money. :|

Private funding with kickbacks and tax incentives and favorable rulings etc etc

She is buying the china for Obama?

Does it have GWB's name all over it, or is it non-denominational China?

If "W" is anywhere in the trim, I suspect that they'll be buying a new set within a year to make up for the "accidentally" broken plates.

Shit, it would be great if GWB just bought those commemorative GWB plates from the infomercials (with his face on them). Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk!

Doesn't look like it has any reference to GWB.

We need to keep out eye on 'private funding' for things for our elected officials that get them special 'appreciation' in return.

When people psend large sums for elected officials for their pet interests that aren't suitable for tax funds, it can create effectively a bribe.

I won't say now they should be prohibited but at a minimum, I'd think full disclosure is appropriate, and it should be only for things owned by the public.

private funding?... check.
happens before almost every changeover?... check.
Use of U.S. companies to make the China?... check.
