I was just wondering - if I were to launch 100 virtualized rackspace cloud instances I could process about 500 units per day. Is that considered a lot for seti?
I imagine if you used any significant CPU they'd charge you for it; but I'm not really sure either.
For any meaningful crunching, virtualized servers with 2GB of RAM, 100 instances would cost about $288/day.
I use rackspace cloud for a proxy server and hosting a few dedicated mission-critical sites that can't be hosted on-site. Pricing is decent comparatively, but it still can get very expensive, very quickly.
Interesting idea, and actually, something I'm doing in this thread:

Would love to get some participation -- does SETI have a console app? Right now, the above experiment I'm doing is Folding, but would like to try others, too. Each session is capped at 100 people, and each person can host 20 servers, so 2,000 servers per session (all free -- typically 100 Azure instances would be $288/day also).
Good desktops run circles around a single virtualized single core server, but getting hundreds of servers running a distributed app is just cool!
