back to the sump pump issue...

so i didn't get it replaced like i should have, and when i came home from work tonight i checked it, and there was a bunch of water in the hole and the pump was dead.

opened the yellow pages to the first company, called them over to put a new one in stat, looks like it will be SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY THREE bucks installed with taxes included. 89 bucks extra because it's an after-hours call...

and i have to pay for it on credit... fml...

on the other hand i had a great weekend in Montreal :awe:

Dude...seriously...a sump pump takes like 15 minutes to replace. You buy a new pump, you unscrew the pipe from the old pump, you screw in the pipe to the new one, and plug it in.

I just changed mine and it took 11 minutes flat. Do you have some weird nuclear powered one or something? $650 for installation is ridiculous! A pump costs around $100.

Your mistake was not even trying. You could have bought a pump, and if you failed getting it in, you could have then called. It isn't really something that gets more expensive due to the clueless fucking things up. There's nothing to fuck up. The installer could have used the pump you bought, if you failed.

i was worried that my basement would flood pretty fast and i panicked and just wanted it done.

i don't think it was that critical of a situation... if i had half a brain i would have done something myself instead of just fail and get fucking bent over

Maybe a few buckets of water carried to the toilet or laundryroom sink could have lowered the water level to reduce your fear of spillover. Then you could have had time to ask friends for a referral for a handyman or plumber to do the job the next day.

A new sump pump is about $100 - $150. Labor should be $150 - $200 max. Add in another $100 for an after hours call and you are still paying too much. Although you do not have much choice at this point.

It is not a problem that you did not know how to do it yourself. However, your evaluation of the problem and how to act on it could use some improvement. Overall, you charge a lot of money as an attorney so you do not have to personally handle such situations yourself and can focus on your own specialized trade.

not to mention, when i heard it kick on a while ago, it made a loud sucking / gurgling noise and the pump stayed on for quite a while even after all the water was pumped out.

so now i am dealing with the quadruple fail possibility of having a shitty installation done on top of getting completely f'n hosed

there's even a rather large "do it yourself" book sitting about 10 feet from me. i am assuming due to it's size that there is a section on sump pumps. not to mention i posted a sump pump thread here several weeks ago and everyone told me to get off my ass and replace it, stat........
