This is more of a software issue, but it doesn't fit any of the software categories. I figured those who visited this forum might be the only ones who knew anyway.

I'm trying to create a forum on a website. I want people (my students) in the forum to be able to use LaTeX. (an implementation sort of like at physicsforums). Anyone know of any add-ons to popular forum software packages that would give me that capability without a ton of work on my end?

Oh, and for fun, in a future school newsletter: "Students of math and physics teacher, Mr. XXX XXXXXX, have recently begun a new project, spending time in a LaTeX chatroom learning the ropes and helping other students." That oughta raise a few eyebrows 😛

I know that LaTeX will compile as a website, so it should be able to do this. However, like you said, it could take a bit of work to get it integrated with existing forum software.

Quick googling led me to this link, which looks like it might have what you're looking for:

They have a [tex] tag that enables users to use LaTeX, which sounds just about right.
