Repeated exposure. This is most usually provoked by low quality latex which has only undergone crude processing, and hasn't been fully refined to remove the allergen protein.

The use of high quality latex has been shown to reduce the risk of developing latex allergy in occupations where latex exposure occurs (e.g. gloves).

Don't have any links, but I used to participate in a couple wind instrument forums, and people would sometimes develop allergies to exotic woods, to the point where an instrument they used to be able to play without issue would cause their lips to swell, and their face to break out. The wood was mainly from the blackwood family. Don't know how widespread it is.

In one particular case, the guy couldn't work with the wood anymore. He made flutes from blackwood(amongst other woods), and had to give up the semi-pro hobby. Some woods are kind of dangerous to work with, but that's due to the inhalation of sawdust, and doesn't necessarily reflect the finished product.

I can't remember what oil people used. I know almond oil was popular, and is what I used, but I don't know how ubiquitous that was.
