I used to like spysweeper by webroot the best, until i read the latest article about overture, the writer of CWS spyware, bought spysweeper. I would imagine it will stop finding CWS now.. and I also heard that the creator of CWShredder stopped making updates for it.

So the question is.. what do you guys do for that cousin or aunt who is heavily infested?

I updated and run these every few days:
Ad-aware
SpywareBlaster
Spybot S&D

Spyware FAQ

I also recommend Firefox (where possible), as I've noticed a slight difference in spyware since moving from IE. I still use IE, but only when necessary like Windows Update.

Avoid programs listed in this article.

how about a antispyware package, something like this.

For removing Viruses I use:

[*]NAV 2003
[*]Panda Online Scan
[*]Trend Micro Online Scan

Prevention:

[*]FireFox 0.9.2 🙂

John: I work at best buy as a computer tech (for a living as well), and we sell spysweeper there for our customers as well as use/install it for them. We have only version 2.6. Is 3.0 a retail release? If not where can I get it?

I also use HiJackThis, but again only version 1.59, where can I get 1.8 (I've searched google already).

You might want to also try SpyWare Doctor.

Thanks for the help.

I agree with "BlueWeasel". Once you have cleaned your system you should start by changing IE to something like Firefox or Opera. That will help reducing spyware and addware.

I run firefox, unfortunatly telling about 100 people/day about it might be a little hard, especially considering they are hillbillies. I'm mainly concerned about getting it out, and staying up to date with the software that we currently sell. For instance, webroot spysweeper.

My main browsers are Opera 7.52 and Mozilla 1.7.1 on my computers,
I use the following,
Spybot,
Ad-Aware,
SpywareBlaster,
Spykiller 2004 and sometimes Hijack this 1.8 if I need to check anything.

Anti-virus wise I use Panda Titanium 2004 and AV software included in my VCOM SystemSuite V5 software which is made by Trend Micro as backup.

I also use Kerio Personal Firewall 4 behind a router and A-Squared Personal Anti-trojan software, can`t be too careful 😉.

Religiously update and run these 3- 3xs per week and you will NEVER have a spyware problem.

if you are untlra paranoid, install spywareguard by javacoolsoftware (real time Spyware protection by the makers of spyware blaster). Free, but has not been updated since Jan.
