I need to order a new one. Im trading mine as pretested and need another. Any chance of doing as good as I am now at 170-175fsb?

Well you never can tell. I just got my new 1.6a and let me tell you this thing rocks. It does 166fsb on 1.55vcore thats the reading from the bios. The pack date is 5-17-02. Good thing you guys ordered one because Intel just discontiuned the 1.6a effective immediately.

Intel Go here scroll down a little ways till you see the heading Intel discontiunes 1.6a

Well, I just got one for a friend and it won't even go over 1.7ghz. It is a retail 1.6a Costa Rica (made on 05/18/02). 🙁

Newegg 1.6a Costa Rice 05/16/02 Pack Date

Running @ 150mhz/2.4ghz Stable for 2 weeks
PC2700 Samsung Original DTL 512mb Ram@376mhz

Posts all the way up to 160mhz fsb but will fail Prime95 after a minute.

I do encounter one strange anomoly tho . . . 3dMark2001 SE almost always fails the Vertex Pixel Shader Test (using AIW Radeon 32mb ddr). Any suggestions?

5/16 pack date for me. running at 160fsb with 4:5 memory settings on my abit bg7. 😀 Its not as good as Thugsrook but I'm happy as a clam. 😀

I have a NewEgg packdate of 4/30 and mine has posted to 2.4ghz without any problems. I'll try later tonight to get higher.

thanks for the replies guys. Hopefully i wont get a dud! I traded mine and an antec PS for a vapochill unit. Hopefully it will rock as good as my old one.

Ahh, I knew something was funky about my problem with the P4 1.6a from newegg. It ended up being an USB issue on my Asus P4B266 motherboard, which I resolved. I'm currently running through a 3dmark2001se loop at 2.303ghz. So Jwyatt, I'm pretty damn sure you won't have any problems running your P4 1.6a at 2.133ghz and higher. Enjoy, these things are sweet overclockers. I've also heard rumors that the P4 2.2a cpus are starting to heat up (i.e. 22 x 133 = 2.9ghz). 🙂
How freakin sweet would that be! Can't wait for the duel channel P4 DDR motherboards to come out. Good luck Jwyatt and let us know how it goes.

What, "vapo sux" is not scientific enough for you????😉

What are you hoping for 3ghz???? My 1.6a I believe would post if I could give it above 1.79v...It posted fine into windows and ran apps at 2.88ghz with 1.79v but idle was high and I knew load would be near 58-60c....HOw much do you think vapo will give you in cooling 5c, 10c?????

Keeping it cooler when applying the higher voltage is the key though. Thats what Im hoping for anyways.

The price was right on the vapo so I traded. Im out 140 from newegg and the PS was a pull from one of my antec cases. So im "hoping" I can jack up the voltage 1.9, 2.0? who knows.

Anyways. Ive always wanted to fool around with the vapochill.

it doesnt really matter how much you attempt to cool it. the CPU will degridate just as quickly no matter what the temp.
these tiny little chips just cant handle that much voltage before breaking down. and it can happen very quickly - like less than 1 months time.

Oooh, did I miss a thread? Between this statement and your previous about ordering a new 1.6A, it sounds like you might have fried your P4. Did it succumb to electromigration?

jaybee

electromigration is dependant not only on voltage but temperature as well. So if your core is cold enough then electromigration will not happen as quickly. I think that 2 Volts is way to high for a p4 though. 1.75 or 1.8 would be more reasonable.

jaybee my 1.6A is working perfectly fine but ive watched a good dozen P4s die an early death already 🙁

all of the failed cpus failed for 1 of these reasons (as far as i could tell)...

1) used more than 1.75v
2) used retail HSF w/OEM TIM
3) piss poor PSU

because of this i lowered my overclock - dont use more than 1.75v if you want your P4 to live more than a few months.

I THIRD THAT...
although i had a very good psu and my temp are below 50C
well...i will wait till i get my new 1.6a...and then i can tell if they are better than my early bird one...

Did you lose (i.e. fry) yours? If so, under what conditions/settings?

So Thugsrook, what your saying is temp will make a difference?

My current cpu using a sunflower for cooling (i dont think much of this cooler BTW) is running ~60c with 1.6v on it. I to have dropped my fsb down to 170 to get the temps down. They were running 65c. Im not sure if the MSi is reporting the temps right though.
