From two posts hidden away in the SETI@home message-board:
I haven't checked these boards since my last post and was quite surprised by the (very localized) firestorm I created with the word "forced" as in..

..soon all SETI@home users will be forced to upgrade to the new version.

Apparently I was a tad bit glib. It seems some of you were turned off by the word "forced." Fair enough - I should have said "required to upgrade to the new version if you wish to continue participating in our project." I apologize for the misleading sentiment.

By the way, we already have over 65,000 people using the new version without being forced.. I mean.. required to upgrade. Want to get a head start? See:

- Matt - SETI@home

The way the "grand migration" will work is this:

1. We'll get all servers in place for BOINC that we believe can handle the load
of 500,000 new users. We're talkin' various web servers, data servers,
databases, etc.. This is happening right now.

2. We'll send out a mass e-mail asking all old SETI@home users (active or
otherwise) to consider moving over to BOINC. As well, we'll post information on
the home page about transferring to BOINC. In these e-mails/posts we'll have a
clear cut-off date (probably at least a month in the future, if not two) when
SETI@home classic will stop working altogether.

3. Before turning off the old databases for SETI@home, we'll generate one final
set of stats pages which will be kept on-line indefinitely (no reason to ever
take them down - they'll take up relatively little disk space and web server
bandwidth).

Just a note about this final step. I won't promise anything, but what I would
like to do before this is take one massive sweep through all users in the
classic SETI@home database and check them for nefarious activity (i.e.
cheating). It's hard to do this effectively when the database is highly active.
But when it is quiescent I'll go to town, removing all users who show any signs
of artificially inflating their stats.

Are we there yet? Are we there yet?

;)

Thanks for the updated info Rattledagger! It does look like Seti classic will be ending soon, perhaps even in the first quarter of 2005.

A small update:
Right. Of course we'll re-do the SETI classic stats snapshot and update the
respective BOINC accounts with the final numbers. Then the XML stuff should be
simple to do.

Really, how many computers and what kind would it take to do 95,000 WU's a day??

Sounds like they'll try to give us a decent amount of notice of the closing too

What's the deal with the Bonic account transfer process?? Will accounts after may 9, 2004 still be allowed to be transfered? I certainly hope so.
