A suspected war criminal who allegedly played a key role in the slaughter of 40,000 civilians in Sri Lanka has landed a cushy job at the United Nations -- with full diplomatic immunity.
Human-rights groups are outraged that Shavendra Silva, 46, a top ex-military commander, was named Sri Lanka's deputy permanent U.N. representative in August, after which he moved to New York.
His arrival came a year after his troops defied international pleas and shelled a no-fire zone packed with women, children and elderly refugees, according to observers.
Silva also stands accused of mowing down a group of separatist political leaders who agreed to surrender and were waving white flags when they were shot.

It's amazing how people can still defend the UN as a worthwhile organization anymore. History will look back on it as being formed with good intentions, but executed disgracefully.

If true, I agree. If not proven true, you have no cause for outrage.

So the perception of wrongdoing is no longer of concern? The men he commanded shelled a no-fire zone that was filled with civilians... how is he not responsible for that?

Now that he has full diplomatic immunity... can there even be an investigation?

My question would have to be...why was he given this position to begin with? The UN's reason for existing is to try to prevent things like this... why would they hire people accused of doing them?

Troops have in the past done terrible deeds without the commands coming from higher ups.
I agree with you, if it's true. I'm not defending him getting the position.

Perhaps our president can apologize to him for the bad things we've done :D

On a more serious note, I agree that the UN is a waste of time and resources at this point, but we do need an organization that can do some of the things the UN is supposed to be doing. I don't know how that would best be done though without turning it into yet another UN type fiasco.

And GWB named John Negroponte the US Ambassador to the UN.

Good point. That justifies this war criminal being appointed. I like the way you think. Do you have a blog or a newsletter I can subscribe to?

Until he sets food in the UN headquarters in NYC he only enjoys 35% diplomatic immunity, not full diplomatic immunity. Why don't you try reading the by-laws of the organization you're slandering before you fire off wildly inaccurate facts.

A good start would be not giving absolute veto power to a bunch of nations, or at least make it so that the nations with veto power rotate.

Maybe this was once the UN's reason for existing, but like all organizations its existence soon becomes more important than the reasons for existence.

You must be new to P&N.

Their charter is to be outraged before obtaining the facts.

Just as dogs will bark on command, people will bark at the words UN. It happens below the level of thought.

If you want the progressives to care, say he is Jewish. Then they will be all up in arms and throwing hissy fits about it. Hell, they'll even pass a UN resolution against him.

This is PRECISELY the purpose of the UN. To give political legitimacy to murderous tyrants.

I don't even understand having most member countries in UN. Dictatorships, police states, fundamentalist regimes and whatnot having votes is an antithesis of it's democratic charter and to Democracies represented. It's like letting Hitler serve on board of the ADL. More like 3/5 Hitlers.

I want to make sure I get this right, Sri Lanka names a man to be deputy permanent U.N. representative and from that you claim the United Nations is worthless? Shouldn't you be outraged against Sri Lanka about this?

Or maybe your expressed outrage is really about diplomatic immunity?
