Latest nvidia WHQL Driver + Win 10 + Intel Security patch = Kaput system?

Last night I tried to update my system with the latest nvidia WHQL driver and the computer became stuck on a black screen. It will only boot into safe mode and I tried running driver cleaner such DDU without avail. The system will hang at the GPU detection phase of the driver install, when the screen turns black and turns back on. In this case, the screen stays black and after a few minutes, triggers a hard reset.

I reverted to the late December driver and everything is back to normal...

So essentially an inconvenience and not a "kaput" system. Big deal.

Is the "Intel security patch" the one pushed by Microsoft? What version number?

I'm running Win 10 Home with Nvidia driver 390.65 and Win update 2018-01 for Win version 1709, OS build 16299.192 with no problems.

Edit: GTX 1070 card

Same here with the 1.40 bios of the AsrockZ 370 Extreme 4, which has the microcode update.

My 970 also works ok with the 390.65 driver.

It must be a hiccup on the op's system.

MS is pushing a patch rollback for systems that have problems with the Spectre fix. I'll see if I can find the link.
