Latest News: New Forum Categories!

There are way way too many forum sections now. In my years here when I've browsed Off Topic I've always just clicked on what was interesting. I may see the title of a car thread that was interesting, maybe a thread about a cell phone, or maybe a sports thread. Now I have to go specifically looking for those posts, and in very very specific categories. If they do insist on breaking them up how about just making "Consumer Electronics" a category instead of all having all the subforums under it, and also having "Automotive" a category without all the subforums. I appreciate what they are trying too do here, but they are way too broken up now.

I like the addition of some more specific forums, but I'm puzzled that the division of software topics didn't include a gaming forum, as general software concerns tend to be so distinctively different from the average game threads.

I like this change, a lot. The old forums were getting dull. This really cleans things up!

WTG AT

I EVEN SEE A PROGRAMMING SECTION!!! *Falls over and dies*

Does AT even listen to our suggestions? All we wanted was a slight modification to the forum categories, not a full-fledged overhaul. Now there are simply way too many categories to navigate through, we don't need separate forums for "Speakers" and "Home Theater". This is not avsforum for christ sakes.

The only thing people have ever been seriously critical of is the flawed search engine. Spend your time fixing that instead of mucking around with what was already working fine.

divide and kill i guess. perhaps they want to lower the number of users😛
the actual active user base and its interests probably do not justify so many sub catagories, its insane. you are just going to have a lot of dead sub catagories which are not very useful to anyone. frankly it clutters up the webpage and is poor for navigation. its just not user friendly

I love it. For years some have wanted this, for years some didn't. I guess I fall in the "for years who cares" catagory.

I think they did a nice job.

we will be adding pc and console gaming forums, but splitting up forums is difficult so we're taking it slow.

Agreed. The great thing about ATOT and the original reason I registered is that if something is posted, you know a large number of people are going to see it and will put in their 2 cents, and it will continue to get bumped so that many more people will see it over the course of a day. One-stop shopping for some non-politically-charged news, sports, YAGT, YACT, and everything else. After the new wears off, some of these obscure categories have "post here and wait several hours for your thread to get 3 responses and then die" written all over them.

The reason I spend so much time at ATOT is the diversity of topics and the number of active users in one place, combined with a good dose of irreverence (the character of the place). This is going to hurt all of that IMO.

I say keep the console and PC gaming to a single forum. No need to split it up.

Its hard to find the right balance. Too specific, and it wont get enough traffic (peripherals, anyone?). Too broad, and it wont be focused enough to draw attention.

IMO:

I'd say hardware is just right.
Consumer electronics really only needs one forum.
Same with automotive.
Software should be apps, games, OS, DC and programmming.

The rest is just fine, although the layout is pretty much a disaster in firefox right now.

When did Anandtech forums cease to be a tech site and become a GeoCities / MySpace / every site trying to be everything to all people and doomed to failure-forum?

The look and layout I zipped and ignored. That will get sorted out. This though, this, I don't get in the least. Why come here if the site doesn't have a true theme anymore?

Maybe adding is burying myself further. What is the theme? It was a tech site with more.
I'm not sure what it is with the automotive/social/etc.

Agreed. I see no reason to split them up. The members there will eventually designate threads themselves by prefixing titles with the format they are posting about.

But as far as what has happened already, I love the new categories. It's about time this place spruced things up to try and get more people in here.

Well my time here is done. I hate having to now search a billion forums when I could just read one for the same topics. Anandtecj forums are now like everyone elses forums and that bothers me. Cya Ill be back every once in a while.

yep AT really fscked up with this upgrade to the categories. time to go back to the drawing board guys, this is just AWFUL.
Jesus Christ, stop being a whiny little Nancy, they are trying something a litttle different. Give it some time, I'm sure they'll be doing a lot of adjusting.

I agree. It's not like your opinion of the forums takes a 180 once they try something new. You act like you're Jack Bauer and they spilled your milk...come on now. It can't hurt that bad.

The good side:

- AT Forums is finally taking on a new look/they are listening to us and wanting to improve the forums
- Thread links don't become broken with the new categories
- The new categories for the most part are great
- The new color schemes look awesome
- The search is being fixed over the next few days
- There are some new features like ratings and thread icons

The bad:

- Category organization isn't perfect
- There are some rather nonintrusive layout problems
- The color scheme is hard on some peoples' eyes because of poor display calibration and there is no alternative for them
- People think they have to leave to get their point across

still not a fan of the new look, but i think the new categories are great, especially the car forums. off topic was getting really crowded, to the detriment of some of the threads being able to get their due time on the first page. i think that is a definite improvement.
