Latest info from SETI@Home...

Another couple posts by Matt Lebofsky, hidden-away in the forums:
At this point we're basically just waiting on the latest release of BOINC, which includes newer user-friendly features (like not having to deal with an account key). This should make transitioning over from Classic even easier.

We may also wait for the SETI Enhanced client, but this isn't really a gating item (though it would ensure that our hardware could handle the influx of 300K+ new users, and that we would have plenty of work to send out to the new users so they aren't left hanging out to dry).

The last internal discussion we had on this matter looked something like: new client released by mid-october. Immediately following would be a mass e-mail saying we are shutting down Classic in a month, here's how to install BOINC, etc. Then around mid-november, the switch is thrown.

Actually, BOINC is far less complicated than SETI classic. For example, SETI classic had a third database devoted strictly as a buffer to store science before it was validated/assimilated. But since more information is presented to the user, and the user doesn't get credit right away for results submitted, it seems a lot more complicated.

Anyway.. I'm working on a science stats page, and a "progress" page not unlike the classic one. I'll try to get those up soon (i.e within the next six weeks).

Thanx for the info RD!

I was just thinking today about moving some of my pcs from classic over to other projects... looks like I'll get to move all of them soon..

Thanks for the info RD 🙂

Well it looks like I'll get to see my 5th S@H classic anniversary 🙂 ,& then if their on plan it'll get killed shortly after my birthday 😉
I hope they give us a chance to drain our Q's

Thanks for the info, Rattledagger!
🙁 I won't make it to 4 years 🙁 , Well what the h..k, there is always BOINC! 😀

My 4 year is 10/4, so I should make it, but I don't know how much creedence to put into this...*shrugs*.

Argh! Well, at least 40 days should be enough to put me in the top 20 in my class (barring any unforseen crashes on my end). Well, I guess I'll be taking the Bonic plunge sometime in...oh...November.

5th... 😕

Hey, didn't you start before me, meaning you'll soon hit 6 years. 😎

As for how the shutdown will actually happen, not sure, this can be from stopping splitting immediately and cutting wu-distribution right afterwards and wait till November for every result to be returned, or to keep distributing wu till they shut downs everything at once...

Darn, I will only make it to 8000 wu's by then, provided they let us run to the wire.

Gotta try and fix that.

Must reach 10,000 work units before the end. It's on now LOL

:Q Your two off-site comps are crunching on ... 😀

Lol true true , Guilty as charged. I was just thinking, after I made my goal, that since I had 1023 it would be nice to get 10230 lol. Then I could say I gave it 90% more effort this time.

I am gonna try and make it, 70% just don't look the same lol

OOPs Thank you very much Peter
 Jag tackar ödmjukt Petrus, du är en stor vän och lagkompis

I was hoping to make it into the top 100 (I already blew my class away a long time ago), but I don't think that's going to happen. Hell, even the top 3 for the team doesn't seem likely anymore. 🙁

Perhaps this will refresh your memory.

"petrusbroder,
The idea behind TABOO was to help long time members reach their milestones. Team mates that have been with the team for quite awhile & have been actively crunching for all or most of that time.
Mike is certainly fits that catagory & is a great & deserving team mate but, IMO, if he really was interested in getting the milestone certificate he wouldn't have been crunching for the RA... he would of been crunching under his own account.

I hope everyone understands what i mean here... i'm not the most eloquent writer.
And certainly no offense to Mike. If he wants help we can add him to the list.

This is all my own opinion & i certainly don't speak for the entire TABOO members"

I understand, my vote goes for you guys to get Eltano over the line and good luck. Go TeAm TABOO!!!!!

I have to say something here.

I have been a member of the Rebel Alliance for a while now. I came to be a Rebel Alliance member when Jim (Freewolf) offered me a place to crunch "what ever project I wanted"

(without having to deal with a few members who felt I was a traitor for leaving seti to test dpad. I wanted to crunch where I was not harrassed by anyone about my choice of projects.)

Things were cooking, The Rebel Alliance was gaining ground in quite a few areas.
I was helping jim on the Dimes project, again a few individuals made it no fun to help the team. So the rebel Alliance decided to help the project (our original plan was to help the project by helping the team, but because we were set to pass the top contenders, we were told that mini teams were not fair. No problem, I moved off the project and jim continued, again there were more problems. Nasty pm's etc...
Jim moved us to our own team where we are doing quite nicely btw. I even moved off fad and I have even moved my crunchers back to my old seti account to crunch under my own name ( I will never leave the Rebel Alliance ) , I was hoping this would help Jim. I was wrong.

I know who my friends are,
They are the Rebel Alliance.

Jim has been an Example of the calibur of the Rebel Alliance member.
He offered me a place to crunch whatever I wanted without feeling like I was a traitor to the team. He has shown me what TeAm crunching is all about, he has defended this right not just for me but all members.

That would be enough to seperate him to a loftyier status in my book, but he has done so much more.

He has never demanded nor told us what to crunch, we always have a choice.
He has always stood behind us. I can not say that about many teammates here with as much conviction.
He pulled off computers from his fad project to help me reach my goal of 5000 wu, and when I decided to go farther he simply laughed and joked with me. He helped out when he found out my computers were all hit with a power spike. He helped me reach my highest production ever (as did peter🙂 )
But more than that he has sold me an 1400+ and a 2000+ to help replace the dual xeon 2.8 that I lost in the spike. (sold to me cheap so I could afford them)

Today I learned he has included the parts I need but can't afford yet to get those 2 computers up and running in with the 2000+, I am reminded once again of the team spirit that flows here.

All this while being my best friend and Captain.

I thank Jim and the Rebel Alliance for their contributions, teamwork, and integrity.
I have learned a lot crunching with you guys.

TeAm Anandtech is our home (Rebel Alliance), its where we started and want to be. But the team has changed a lot. Mini-teams were always accepted and always should be. They help the team in more than just numbers. They are trying to help the team in the standings as well as give back to the team the accomplishments that can be achieved by working together.

Mike
