Sorry folks, it's not looking good. I thought there might have been a way to run the server on another machine in a way transparent to the clients, but apparently there is not. Since we can no longer run the server on www3.nd.edu, we might have to release new clients with a new address coded in (as well as the ``personal proxy'' code, which could be used to solve this problem, should it happen again, without needing to redistribute binaries).
Anyway, I'm hesitating a little to try and come up with a better way. I know that trying to distribute new binaries is going to be a real pain, and will cause us to lose members. We really can't afford to lose any members, so I want to eliminate all possibilities before I go there.

More from the front page:

Attention (11/21/01): We are temporarily in a holding pattern. The machine that was acting as our central server is no longer available (by no fault of anyone - just unfortunate circumstances). We are in the process of configuring a new server and new (more robust ;) clients to communicate with the new server. No computations will be lost (including what folks are computing right now), but it will be at least a few more days before the new programs are available for download to return results. Sorry for the inconvienience, but things should be back to normal, or better, soon.

This is really not good. This will be this projects first major blow. I wonder how many will leave because of this!

I'll trust everyone on the honor system. I had a set back that cost me about 35 DPs. If evryone adds up the DPs and it's at the number, I'll blow the cash. :)

Look at the bright side. We got MM to spend before it went down. ;)

Well you can put me down for 425
That all I have to flush when they are back..........and hopefully the client will be accepted?
I've shut them down and gone back to Seti full strength or so for now.

You shouldn't lose any points. Just set your client to non-perm connection right now. You can send them with the new client. This is about notre dame pulling the plug on the server. There are no issues with the client except that it kinda DOS attacks the server when the server is down.

/agree -> This is about notre dame pulling the plug on the server

<< I wonder how many will leave because of this! >>

I really expect very few will leave because of this. Perhaps a few that weren't very active anyhow. I know OK has said he's going back to SETI, but I think his original plan was to leave after Turkey Day.

Even universities don't seem to give much support to DC projects :(

/me walks away counting 2001, 2002, .... Oh when can I dump? :) :)

All my clients dump to the Statsaholic client, so if Virus gets lucky in terms of how quickly he can implement a database backend to his DP server, I might be able to dump before the new ND server is up.

According to to math (which I don't trust) we dumped an average of 2515 per dump with 12 days left. Meaning we should have produced 30180 in that 12 days. So in order to give credit where it's do. I believe everyone would have produced the 25000 more and therefore I buy the CPU.

I think everyone did a great job. MM had a great idea that worked like a charm.

As far as losing people, I don't think we'll lose that many at all.

I would not be concerned about losing credit for points that have been found while the server is down. It updated app just needs to know where to send the points. It does not need to be a complete rework of the program. It sounds like they are going to also rework things a little bit right now since they have to get everyone to upgrade anyhow.

From the home office in South Bend:

Update (11/23/01): I've gotten a couple of suggestions for ways to handle the problem without needing new clients. I'm going to take these options to the admins today and see if we can implement one of them. Cross your fingers :)
