Latest console attach rates

Xbox 360: software sales ratio: 7.5
Wii: software sales ratio: 5.3
PS3: software sales ratio: 4.6
Nintendo DS software sales ratio: 4.7
Sony PSP software sales ratio: 4.2

The 360 has a heck of a lead on the PS3 and Wii right now. Although I'm guessing by the end of the year all three console will be about even with all the big PS3 games coming out Mario Kart and WiiFit. I'm a bit surprised the DS and PSP rates are so low since they've been out for so long.

I'm surprised they're so close together since
- DS seems to have 10x the library
- PSP was known more for homebrew use than for its library (though GTA, GOW, FF VII etc. has changed that)

I'm sure the ease of piracy has something to do with that. And probably the fact that they're handheld systems contributes to it as well.

Of course the 360 has a lead; it's been out longer.

What I find more interesting is how many games are purchased each year per system.
3.6 for Wii
4.6 for PS3
4.7 for 360

With how fast the Wii is selling, it's clear that soon the Wii will be number one in total software sales.

I wouldn't be surprised if the DS attach rate is low simply due to the sheer number of units they have moved. Attach rate is games per unit right? Too many people have bought multiple DS's (ds, ds lite, ds lite limited editions) that would flood the attach rate.

That's not how attach rates work. It's the number of games and accessories sold divided by the number of consoles sold. The 360's attach rate has been huge since it came out.

Wii Play distorts those numbers completely. I'm much more impressed with the PS3's showing.

Someone needs to look up the word "rate"

Someone needs to look up the word "joke" 😛

Well, I wouldn't put it past some people to actually analyze the stats this way. There is a very real possibility that it was not a joke.

You're the one who doesn't seem to understand. Attach rates don't take into consideration how long a console has been out. 360 owners are buying 4.7 games a year; PS3 owners are buying 4.6 games a year. PS3 owners are buying games at almost the same rate as 360 owners, so the only reason for the big difference in attach rates is that the 360 has been out a year longer. Out twice as long, twice the attach rate.

The numbers are misleading for the Wii. Because its cheaper to buy Wii Play, than a separate controller. Yet that counts as a game sold.

Your numbers are very off. The Wii and the PS3 have been out for 1 year 6 months, while the 360 has been out for 2 years 6 months.

Here are the correct values:

3.0 for 360
3.5 for Wii
3.1 for PS3

Technically correct, but misleading due to Wii Play (it's really a $10 crap game packed with a Wiimote). And the PS3 is the only system with full retail games available as downloads, GT5P and Warhawk, neither of which get counted.

Do they filter out budget games for the 360 and PS3 as well? If not, they wii play is not distortional.

Additionally, is there any historical information to indicate the kind of linear scaling between release date and attach rate that would even partially justify the initial calculation?

... Wii Play costs more than the controller it comes with. Not much more, but still more.

When you figure the cost of the Wii Remote, Wii Play is only $10. Which is about what it's worth. It's the equivalent of a XBLA or PSN game, which I assume aren't counted in the attach rates (otherwise I'd expect them to be much higher).

I'm doing my part to distort the attach rates...
40+ Xbox 360 games
~15 Wii games
2 PS3 games
