Small thread and download link here on lastest Avast 5 beta .

Avast 5 info with screenshots .

I have installed it on Win7 x64 Ultimate(RTM) and its working fine ,low memory usage is impressive and nice option to run in game mode(silent mode) which disables the update message/sound alerts,you have different options on this too for time lengths etc...

Memory usage
AvastUI.exe 1384k

Select show processes from all users (in Task Manager) brings up AvastSvc.exe 52186k so thats all under 7000k.

It's an improvement in all areas on Avast 4.8 IMHO ,I like the layout/style as well so can't wait for final version :).

The main Avast Beta forum can be found here.

You're welcome,so far no issues with Avast 5 beta 2,I really do like this AV and it'll be my main AV especially once the final version is released.

I was just on the avast site yesterday, and the final non beta release keeps being pushed back. Its mid November/09 now, who knows when it will finally come out? But since my wife uses Avast, I am looking forward to the new version that will come in a wide variety of different options. With paid versions even being a full security suite.

i have tried both Avast and AVG. i would recommend either over any paid antivirus solution. AVG, unfortunately, got a case of the "bloats" last year. still good, though. i have been using AntiVir for over a year and i recommend it to everyone. IMHO, the best of the 3 free AVs out there.

AntiVir Memory footprint
-------------------------------------
avguard.exe --> 384 K
sched.exe -----> 36 K
avgnt.exe -----> 1500 K
-------------------------------------
TOTAL ---------> 1900 K

The main issues I had with Avira are auto updating sometimes does not work(you have to get the VDF files manually from their homepage,I know this is down to the server) and second sometimes it gives false positives.

I am a user of Avast on my wife's computer and a user of avira on my own computer.

Sadly I am still stuck on dial up internet access, and when the avast final non beta version finally comes out, I will upgrade to avast five on my wife's computer.

And for what its worth, if avast 5 is going to have to be complete new install, I find avast goes from first install to completely updated far faster than avira. Far more important on dial up than on broadband by many hours of less than perfect protection.

Its due in November, anyway its a big improvement on 4.8,better layout,nice stealth option for gaming and less ram resources.

Btw the latest build of Avast 5 Beta you can install over the old 4.8 version,however when I tried that on my other PC(laptop with Win7 x86 Ultimate using Avast 4.8) it said it had to uninstall the old version first which it did,anyway it did a reboot and I had no issues after.

Just tried the latest BETA and it broke my outbound Outlook Express e-mails. Looking for a solution right now.

It looks to me like the next generation of "Best Free AV" is going to be Avast vs Panda Cloud. Avira's interface is just too clunky and not user friendly in comparison to these two.

I don't think MSE is mature enough to compete quite yet.

Ignore this double post due to AT forums having technical issues.

I have avast! on 5 computers. Problem is that with the beta, sending email is spotty. Sometime it goes and usually it doesn't.

It may be my email client (SeaMonkey). I may have to look around for another program. :(

edit: all is well now.

I am also using the latest beta and it is a big improvement over 4.8. It is much easier to use and I like the UI. The only problem I have is when the web shield is turned on, the internet connection stops working. For now, I just have it turned off. Anyone have any ideas on how to get around this or what the issue may be?

Avast 5 Beta preview over@PCMag here http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2356315,00.asp

The core antivirus/antispyware engine got a rewrite for this edition, and ALWIL added some new components to aid in the fight. A new heuristics engine watches process behavior to detect malware that signatures won't catch. A new code emulator lets avast! evaluate behaviors without letting a process run and also examine programs that are packed to conceal their contents.
This version adds scheduled scanning and detection of less risky "potentially unwanted programs." Avast! uses a new virus database format optimized for incremental updates. And the app's new gaming mode suppresses popups when it detects a program running in full-screen mode. Other notable features include boot-time scanning, wake-up from sleep mode to scan, and automatic scanning of files received via e-mail, IM clients, and P2P clients. And unlike AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0, avast!'s free edition has all the power of the paid Pro edition.
