Killing Some Rumors: 2004 GTO Introduction and Performance Facts from GM!
-Branden Farthing
Pontiac's GTO is one of the most tensely awaited new product debuts in recent GM history. Because of Pontiac working so feverishly on the new car to #1 get it federalized, and #2 make it undeniably a GTO, there has been much rumor, and little hard fact about the production car. This combined with the odd combination of knowing what the Monaro is and comparing it to what the GTO legend is that has many classical Pontiac fans up in arms.
Historical arguments aside I created this site to be the number one community for the new GTO and I plan on doing that by providing enthusiasts with factual and timely information and resources on the GTO. In a recent conversation with Jim Hopson, the GTO representative from Pontiac/GMC I was able to get answers on a few pressing questions and lay a few persistent rumors to rest...
Here are the Facts-
The 2004 GTO will be among if not the fastest Factory GTO. "F-body like Performance" is expected, meaning low 5 second 0-60 times and sub 13.5 second quarter-mile times. The car is also pegged at a 155 MPH plus top speed with the 6 speed model.
The showcar's exhaust system will be different from the production version. The production version will be a true dual exhaust with the tail pipes exiting from the same side of the car. The headers on the showcar will give way to more standard issue LS1 manifolds.
The GTO is on track for a September start of production in Australia followed by a November debut in US showrooms. Initial availability will be VERY limited.
The car will only have one engine in 2004 which is a 340-350 horsepower LS1 specifically tuned for more low-end torque. This will make the LS1 accelerate much harder than in the deceased 5.7L LS1 F-body and in some respects similar to the LT1.
