Killing Some Rumors: 2004 GTO Introduction and Performance Facts from GM!

-Branden Farthing

Pontiac's GTO is one of the most tensely awaited new product debuts in recent GM history. Because of Pontiac working so feverishly on the new car to #1 get it federalized, and #2 make it undeniably a GTO, there has been much rumor, and little hard fact about the production car. This combined with the odd combination of knowing what the Monaro is and comparing it to what the GTO legend is that has many classical Pontiac fans up in arms.

Historical arguments aside I created this site to be the number one community for the new GTO and I plan on doing that by providing enthusiasts with factual and timely information and resources on the GTO. In a recent conversation with Jim Hopson, the GTO representative from Pontiac/GMC I was able to get answers on a few pressing questions and lay a few persistent rumors to rest...

Here are the Facts-

The 2004 GTO will be among if not the fastest Factory GTO. "F-body like Performance" is expected, meaning low 5 second 0-60 times and sub 13.5 second quarter-mile times. The car is also pegged at a 155 MPH plus top speed with the 6 speed model.

The showcar's exhaust system will be different from the production version. The production version will be a true dual exhaust with the tail pipes exiting from the same side of the car. The headers on the showcar will give way to more standard issue LS1 manifolds.

The GTO is on track for a September start of production in Australia followed by a November debut in US showrooms. Initial availability will be VERY limited.

The car will only have one engine in 2004 which is a 340-350 horsepower LS1 specifically tuned for more low-end torque. This will make the LS1 accelerate much harder than in the deceased 5.7L LS1 F-body and in some respects similar to the LT1.

Nice to see that little "F-Body Like" performance snippet :D

ROFL. You don't know a damn thing about F-Body's do you? LS1 powered F-Body's were capable of low 13's/some high 12's bone stock out of the factory. 305hp. An Evo/WRx STi are barely capable of that with the same amount of horsepower, AWD, but weigh 600lbs less. I love Mustangs and Ford vehicles in general, but you have to respect the LS1 - it's one mean engine.

Yeah, I can't think of a better engine that's come out of the states. Heck, it's hard to come up with any V8 in the world that's as good.

Wasn't there a member here (John?) who bought a Firehawk a while ago? I can't find the thread...

He had problems with the paint job and GM refused to properly fix it. So he traded that in for a Lightning. I'd give my left nut for a L.

tmb - lol I'm just messing with ya :) Seriously though - ditch the Firebird and upgrade to something where you can pick on Vipers and Porsche's

Angry-

Would if I could afford to. Like it or not, the LS1 F-body had the best "bang for the buck" available.

I really should have something faster though. :D

Hopefully it will not have F-body like handling. Does it have a solid rear axle?
