Hi, I'm having massive ping issues while I'm playing LoL. I just started a game at my normal static 50 ms, then 10 minutes into the game it jumped to a fluctuating ping between 200 and 300 ms. Here's my tracert to the LoL server:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
2 149 ms 250 ms 374 ms 63.231.10.254
3 347 ms 156 ms 275 ms tukw-agw1.inet.qwest.net [71.217.185.233]
4 383 ms 284 ms 428 ms sea-brdr-02.inet.qwest.net [67.14.41.18]
5 441 ms 346 ms 357 ms 63.146.27.70
6 327 ms 346 ms 299 ms 0.ae2.XL4.LAX15.ALTER.NET [140.222.227.21]
7 405 ms 394 ms 374 ms POS7-0-0.GW3.LAX15.ALTER.NET [152.63.112.109]

One of my roommates is streaming a movie over LAN, I'm not sure could potentially be causing the problem, or if it's not a local issue. Does the second hop of the tracer route being 374 ms mean it is in fact something local?

If you're friend is streaming over the LAN then I would think you should be okay (can you still ping the router consistenty sub 1ms when he's doing this, what are all the connections, gigabit? 100Mb? 10Mb? How many MB is the movie?). But I would definitly test that out next time you play.

You sure nobody else is downloading/uploading anything from the internet during that time?

The second hop being slow could be your router (the actual router part, not the LOCAL switching part), the ISP's first router you connect to, or anything inbetween (im not a telecom buff, i dont know if telecom equipment can add latency to packets)

Yes, unless CenturyLink is having issues in your area. You should check if anyone is downloading anything though.

Your consumer router/switch may not up to the task of switching packets required for streaming high bandwidth video across your LAN. They often have a weak CPU and very little cache.

The issue seems to be resolved for now. My friend who lives nearby said that centurylink generally has issues right now and I need to restart your router if I get slow service right now. Only reason I didn't do that is because there are 9 people living in this house and it's a hassle to go around to everyone and tell them you're about to cut out the internet for a few minutes.

Meh the issues are back. I had 50 ping for about 30 minutes then I went back to the same issue. The thing that I'm noticing is that the jitter is really high, about 100 ms. This seems indicative of a heavy load on my router. Unfortunately we have to use an inferior router leased to us by Centurylink. I have a really good dual band router that we could use were it not for that router lacking a DSL plugin.

Great customer service!

I agree that it looks like a router issue to me (getting bogged down on a high NAT load or large number of sessions), but could also be a bandwidth issue, especially if someone is torrenting (tends to use all the upstream bandwidth, causing ACK delays and latency).

I would try a speedtest (speedtest.net works) to see if it's a bandwidth issue. Speedtest when it's working great and then again when it's slow.

If that's not it, then I'd address the router. It's certainly somewhere between your LAN and the ISP, which means either their line or their router/modem.

I agree, I wish more companies were proactive with customer service
