Late 6970?

Interesting, only time will tell...

I wonder how long it will be before someone claims nVidia paid off TSMC to lower AMD's yields...

This news has been out last week. I'm surprised nobody has posted here until now as I thought this would be major (albeit unconfirmed) news for the AMD crowds. AMD can't afford to stumble. NV stumbles and they're still fine. AMD stumbles and back to square 1.

That was loooong time ago, it's pretty much the other way around now.
AMD got the market leading position for almost a year, grabbed most of the market share, CPU arm also moved back to black while NV stumbled multiple times during the past year - one more flop and revenues will really start dwindle down, making it even harder to get money to cover the necessary astronomical R&D costs.

That may be true for the (small market) gamng graphics cards, but nVidia owns the professional graphics card business hands down. That is also where they make bank, as businesses are willing to shell thousands for a card that can render and model quickly. R&D from other companies (like the one I am working for) shell out their money for nVidia to use on their R&D.

Be interesting to find out why if this is true. But for me it seems to be too close for news like this to surface. OEMs should had got their initial shipments of chips for their cards a couple weeks ago at a min.

AMDs been kicking ass left right and center for awhile now, but if they can't release 69xx soon, and the 580 is 480 powerful while being 5xxx series quiet and lower power consumption, it could really hurt AMD. I mean think of how many more 4xx series cards would have been bought had it come out the same time as 5xxx series.

According to TechEye, the delay was caused by poor yields, which is supposedly in the single digit range.

Wow, that's pretty appalling, especially as they are already used to the manufacturing process.

I think this piece of rumor of false. I fully expect wide availability of both camps new high end single GPUs by the end of this month.

God, please, STOP with this "professional graphics card business" nonsense. I work in this field and I buy Quadros all the time, we develop our own CUDA apps etc - if you think Quadro sales are even come close to cover R&D costs then you're truly out of your mind.

It's actually not the high and but the mid-tier that matters the most financially.

We all know this is like the 3rd time around on the 40nm for ATI/AMD...

And they had HUGE problems on their 2nd run with the 5xxx cards right? I mean it took forever for 5xxx series to come out! right?

Why would AMD, who now has probably more understanding than most on the 40nm, have problems when they didnt have problems 1 year ago?

You know who supposedly had problems with 40nm and yeilds? and had delays because of it? Nvidia.

Its most likely just "spin", I dont see why amd would have problems with 40nm anymore (as long as their chips arnt HUGE compaired to what they had before).

Hmm... I don't remember saying Quadro sales cover the cost of nVidia's R&D, let me re-read what I wrote.

Yup, still not there. Perhaps you should re-read what I said.

AMD does not have a lead in terms of graphics market share, plain and simple. Sure, they can use profits from their CPU market and put it into their GPU development (which would be stupid), but that does not mean they have "grabbed most of the market share". nVidia is in a much better position as far as making mistakes goes. Another flop from nVidia won't effect them as much as a flop from AMD would.

Because they don't have much experience with large chips?

Rumors for the 6970's are saying 360mm^2
The 58xx cards are 334mm^2 (from 1year ago)

So them makeing a chip thats 26mm^2 bigger is gonna give them problems with the 40nm?

Nvidia are doing 529mm^2.

360mm^2 is tiny compaired to that, and like I said amd has had more time with the 40nm proccess. They didnt have any problems with the 334mm^2 they did a year ago, I dont think today with even more understanding of 40nm they have problems with a 360mm^2.

Well AMD also had issues with 40nm on the 5000 series for months. The process just hasnt been good. But I was under the impression the process issues have been fixed? But this is supposed to be a much more complex and larger chip than Cypress and Barts. So perhaps with the increased complexity AMD is having yield issues? I personally find it hard to believe this close to release we are now hearing about this issue. So I suspect it isnt a true problem.

Much larger and complex?

Wasn't that fudzilla too?

From an interview with Eric Demers (AMD's GPU CTO), http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/column/kaigai/20101101_403541.html

Seems to be under 400mm^2 and only slightly larger than Cypress.

@GaiaHunter.

If you follow that line, thats slightly below the (cayman) box, on the left hand side, it ll read 350mm^2. The box for Cayman, is only a tiny bit above that. Which goes along with what rumors are saying of the 360mm^2.

Anyways... that artical by Fudzilla, might just be... FUD (fear uncertrainty and doubt) so people are more likely to buy a 580 instead of waiting for a 6970 to be released and benchmarked against the 580.

Well you basically just through that out there to try and plant a seed.

I don't think there is an emoticon rolling his eyes back far enough to show you how I feel about your post.

Looks like 5XX could be the only game in town for Xmas. Although I don't really put any stock into what FUD says.

I wonder where all the people touting AMD's small-die strategy are going to stand on this one...

OCGuy... dont mind fudzilla, hes *most likely* just spreading FUD for nvidia, so people are more tempted to buy a 580 when their released (if 6970s arnt out by then).

Fud does seem to have a very pro nvidia outlook, and hes often wrong about things.

This is even bigger nonsense than your first post - it's flat-out wrong. AMD has a HUGE lead in market share, over 61% now. It's a fact, not something debatable, period.

It's about time to familiarize yourself with facts instead of opinions, I think: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1866086/amd-dominates-discrete-graphics-market

That 61% was MOBILE discrete -figure.
