Last Week Tonight’s full scale rejection of Trumpism

John Oliver went into detail last night about how Trump (and his defenders and fans) use 3 tactics to dismiss any criticism:

1. Delegitimize the Media
2. Whataboutism
3. Trolling

Sounds familiar? These are the same tactics used on P&N to defend President Dumpster Fire.

I suspect the familiar crew on this forum is going to try to use #1 in short order to try and discredit Oliver, not even realizing that they're validating his observations.

I think one could make an entire college degree out of the psyops effects over the last 18 months of our lives. I lurk a lot on Reddit and I find the downvote and "patterns" there fascinating. The level and manipulation and denial in large swaths of our population is both amazing and equally horrify in it's effectiveness.

Yes, that was an excellent summary of the right's chief methods of distorting and distracting from the truth. Not just Trump - this has been going on since long before him.

I'll miss Oliver until he returns to the air.

People who hate themselves have deep emotional needs to express negative feelings. If you feel like shit, even if you don't know it, you act like shit and people see you as deplorable.

Unfortunately, self hate also means we hate the urges we feel that indicate its presence so there is a war going on. There are folks looking to shit on anybody and folk looking to shit on shitters. The presence of this paradox and the endless war it brings is why people fail to notice the only way out is to forgive. The other is always a projection of ones own self hate so forgiving the other amounts to forgiving yourself. When that happens a person leaves one dimension of understanding and enters another, largely unseen by most.

Clearly a tremendous intellect with the best memory. It takes talent to combine the topical fluency of GWB with the likeability of Martin Shkreli.

The transcript of Dump attempting to answer questions about Iran. Wow. His cabinet needs to WTFU. We have a deranged CiC with the attention span of a Mediterranean fruit fly. I worry about what my sons could get dragged into with this kind of person at the wheel of our 'democracy.'

The media delegitimizes itself. This has nothing to do with Trump, but our media works not all that differently than our entertainment organizations. It is about clicks and ad revenue, not about unbiased truth. Our media outlets' ultimate goal are profits and growth. This has been happening well since before Trump, its just worse today than ever. At least they tried to hide their bias a little at one point, now they're all just editorials.

What do you think is the best and most unbiased news media organization?

whataboutism eg 1

That isn't what my post was. For once, could you not deflect and address what I said?

Yes, it was. You don't want to talk about how the right distorts and diverts from the truth, which is what the linked piece is about. Instead, you want to criticize the media. Just like all those people on the right Oliver was talking about.

The right does indeed do that. I've seen it. But guess what... so does the left. How many leftist news outlets, as an example, kept telling people what they wanted to hear about Hillary vs. Trump? How'd that work out in reality?

And now number 2 after floating number 1.

Yep, you got it. Both sides are the same...

You guys act like truth isn't truth. What is an unbiased news source? You guys are too busy wanting to attack me to actually discuss the reality of today's media.

The reality of today's media is that it's primarily run like as business, as you say, and its coverage is far from perfect. Business interests may affect things like topic selection and headline framing. However, there is no evidence of widespread dishonesty in the mainstream press. Such a thing would be bad for the aforementioned business interests.

These days, most of the lying is coming from the right, not the press.

Do you have a source for that, or is that your perception?

And I agree with your first paragraph, and business interests seem to trump unbiased reporting. And it isn't even close these days. Remember stories about Trump and the golden showers? Admitidly funny, but unequivocally untrue. Didn't stop them with running with it.
