Nobody wants to be the last US soldier to die in Iraq.

"DAVID Hickman has a special status in US military history that his American colleagues desperately hope he will retain.

The 23-year-old infantryman is the latest US soldier to be killed in Iraq and, with the troops due out tomorrow, they hope he will stay that way."

The guy even called his mother the day before saying that he was coming home for Christmas. Very sad story indeed🙁

Article requires login it seems. Says that he was killed back in mid November in another article I found, hopefully that remains the last.

Correction: Being the 1st, 3022nd, or last... I'm pretty damn sure none of them wanted to.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\Gotta totally agree with Palehorse here, maybe at some later point history will record the last US military grunt to be killed in Iraq, a rather dubious distinction. But as long as the US military maintains military trainers and civilian contractor's in Iraq, the distinction of last to die in Iraq will continue to be a endless question.

As sadly the real question from the US perspective, will be and remain, will the ends justify the means?

As I was somewhat outraged at the Obama speech regarding the Iraq war he opposed, as he saltuted the very unquestioning devotion of US troops whose lives were pissed away in mass stupidity like so much water. 4500 KIA and another 30,000 plus with dehabilating physical wounds like missing arms and legs. Which does not begin to count the Pschological damage.

Maybe we need smarter grunts who demand their last full measure of devotion not go to glorify warmondering idiots who make their money by pissing lives away in stupid quagmires.

Since a few thousand troops are going to stay in Iraq, he will not be the last to die. Unfortunately.

As finally cybrsage says something correct.

Given the fact that Iraqi stability is far wider than it is deep, those last few thousand US troops will be in a weird position.

Somewhat like being in a building that is a total fire trap, and even if competent, far too few put out any initial fires and lacking in fire extinquishers. But if the whole building lights on fire, everyone will burn together with no stabalizing force to prevent the spread of what amounts to a forest fire far past Iraqi borders.
