One of the really bright ones, where it has the heavy base, then the lamp itself is sort of a funnel pointed upwards...

Wondering if anyone knows exactly what they're called, and where I could find one online.

:) Thanks!

that might be true... the one i have has this grill over the top. invisible to people from below but it protects the bulb

I haven't looked in a long time, but I thought you could still get halogen ones. They usually have that grill dabuddha mentions and they also have some sort of automatic shutoff if it overheats.

BTW, this specific type of floor lamps is called a "Torchiere."

That's what I thought... technically, they're banned in dorm rooms... but hey. :D

'K, so I'm thinking that flourescent lights are good... This one runs off of a flourescent bulb and stuff, I think it'd run much cooler than a regular halogen light, thus making it safe for dorm rooms... any thoughts?

And, that might explain the extra price?

The name you are looking for is torchiture" ( I know the spelling sucks on that one.) Here, sound it out: torch-i-ture said without pause at the dash marks.

<edit>
Found it, the spelling is "torchiere" but pronounced as above.

Uses an incandescent bulb of up to 100 watts
Incandescent => not flourescent or halogen.

Cool, wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something... $20 isn't bad.

IKEA!

I'm not sure about the prices...they look like they're in pounds but it's a global store so they'd be in U.S. and Canadian stores too.:)

Hmm that's pretty neat. We could really use something like that, because the flourescent-bulb torchiere we have now doesn't give off good enough directional light to really read anything in our living room. If that used a flourescent bulb up top instead of incandescent, it'd be perfect. Anyone know if one like that exists?

Can't you get those flourescent blubs that screw into normal sockets? That might be an option although I think the bulbs run like $12. Of course they last a really long time, though...
That might work.

Evadman: I beat you to Torchiere like 3 days ago. It's pronounced "Tor-sheer." :)
