Last of Us on PC- What Happened?

The Last of Us was eagerly anticiptated by the PC community. The game has been a HOT mess since it was rerleased. Even with the many patches, the game still doesn't run well.

What a disaster. And so, my question is what do you think happened? Was it rushed because Sony wanted to capitalize on the popularity of the HBO show? The game should had never been released in its current form.

I'll buy the game probably. Maybe during the Steam summer sale.

It was surely rushed to ride the hype of the end of first season of the show. With that said, it's passable now for me, as I can run 1440p high 50-80 fps with an i5-12400F, RX 6700 XT, and 32GB of DDR4-3200, though I play with a controller. Not sure if the mouse problems have been completely fixed. I know they put out a patch for a mouse fix the other day but never looked to see how it works for people since I don't play mouse & keyboard.

If you run an AMD gpu you absolutely must have resizable BAR / Smart Access Memory turned off in the BIOS though. It was the difference between being at 35-65% gpu usage with framerates in the 30s and 40s a lot vs being at full gpu usage with framerates steadily in the 50s to 80s, absolute night and day difference.

Three things:
1. It was obviously rushed. Tons of crashes, major graphical issues, etc. at launch. Naughty Dog did most of the development and they obviously didn't allow enough time for testing.
2. The console version has dedicated resources designed to facilitate texture streaming that PC's don't have. ND basically offloaded all of this to the CPU, which created all sorts of issues with fps and very long loading times.
3. ND did not attempt to create 'medium' size textures that were of good quality. If you look at some of the comparisons basically high texture quality matches the PS5 quality. Ultra is slightly better. Medium is downright awful. You need about 14gb of vram to get close to 60 fps on high quality at 1440p. Most people don't have a GPU with that much vram, so they are stuck with awful textures.

Has anyone considered the conspiracy theory that Sony is deliberately releasing crap PC ports to sell more PS5 units? You get online, read about how bad the experience is for all the other PC players and then read the PS5 game review on some gaming site or a user review on a forum somewhere and it seems that the PS5 experience is relatively flawless. You think to yourself, why bother with the PC? Let's just pick up a PS5. Should be a great investment for future playstation exclusives too.

That would be incredibly dumb, just don't release on PC then.

Issues probably stem from a combination of rushing and lack of experience with PC development.

That is not my experience. It runs fine with BAR enabled, although I am running it on a 6950xt so I'd expect it to run ok. It's running at 3440x1440 at mid 80s FPS.

I'm not a fan of the game though, it's so slow paced.

Occams razor. They got cheap and hired Iron Galaxy of Arkham Knight infamy.

Strange, maybe you only need it with lower end AMD cards. Literally two minutes after I complained about my gpu usage on reddit's r/TheLastOfUs subreddit someone recommended disabling rebar on AMD gpus and it fixed my gpu usage problems immediately.

I'll check it without in the morning if you want. I have 64gbs of ram, a 580x3d and a 6950xt so it's possible that's compensating and hiding the bad performance.

The PC version was being worked on by the same crew that ported Arkham knight to PC years ago..which was also a mess at launch. So it's not naughty dog specifically that worked on the pc port. I don't have if because I'll probably just end up getting it for PS5 next time it's on sale but those who have the same card as me and a recent CPU haven't had many performance issues but technically you should not with brute force hardware like that.

WTF did they trust this company again?
It made WB lose millions, because they had to refund everyone.
I would of never used that company after the WB incident.

Anyhow the game is a mess still im hearing.
Its really sad, as this is one of the Play Station exclusives that is great, we don't see these issues in God of War, Days Gone, and Uncharted.

Yea I have no clue why they were chosen to port it. I could only guess and say they wanted something to be available for pc by the time the HBO show came out.

I played it several times on PS4 and I will want to replay it with better graphics but hopefully by the time that comes it will be patched on pc or I'll just wait until the PS5 version is cheaper.

Iron Galaxy did Uncharted also. In the end ND/Sony thought it was good enough to release, the buck stops with them.

so they wanted to ride the tv season, and ended up getting on the wrong bus to begin with.

Ugh seriously...

Theres pretty much no difference with it off or on when I was testing. Maybe a few FPS faster with it on.
I don't know if it was coincidence but loading times were a lot longer with it off.

My system usage of ram with the game running was over 16gbs but I didn't close everything down before.

According to DF this is mostly fixed now. It should function relatively well on midrange systems now. In particular, medium textures have been significantly improved. If you have a higher end computer you may get slightly worse performance.

WTF is up with these games NOT wanting us to have higher end PC's.
Are they telling us to just get on a console because they are too lazy as hell to port anything properly, and feel the need to blame the .1% players who have that top tier rig, that are able to run Crysis without breaking a sweat.

From what I heard this game has been optimized better, and with a high-end gaming rig, I said fuck it and bought this. I love the show, and while I am not a fan of third person shooters, the combat here is rated highly among third person fps style combat, and the gameplay video backs it up. Let's go Ellie and Abby, while HBO plays with itself with two years plus between seasons.

Yeah, the combat is really unique and once you are done with this, you can enjoy more of the same combat style in Uncharted 4 since it's the same two game designers behind it too. Last of Us and Uncharted 4 made me feel grateful that I had a console. That kind of smooth gameplay and HDR was not available in PCs of the time.

They also expand on the combat in part 2 of the game. I've played the first title so many times on PlayStation but only played through the second game once because it's so long.

Surprisingly I feel the second season of the show cut out a lot of the stuff that was in the part 2 game compared to part 1.

There are three different large lastofus2 subreddits active which go over all that from three different perspectives

one is like a hate subreddit on all things Bella Ramsey and the show, the shit there is insane.

one is with lots of gamers basically lashing out at any difference with the game, though they are more focused on the writing and characters at least vs the first sub which is just a bunch of incel loons, with a solid chunk being reasonable and accepting some things as a good change and some as a bad change as well.

the third is people who never played the games and just kind of judge the show more as a standalone product.
