Last Man on Earth

Anyone watch the series premier?

I thought it was pretty decent. Nice change of pace for a TV show. I thought Will Forte and Kristen Schaal were perfect casting choices (granted Forte created it)

I really enjoy the 1st two episodes.

IMO, it wasn't great. Had its funny moments, but my overall first impression is that it's not gonna be around very long.

Sadly, I agree with that.

Meanwhile we'll get more schlock like Two and a Half Men, or Big Bang Theory that will stay on the air for a decade.

I thought it was awesome, and I found myself laughing several times! As you said, Will Forte and Kristen Schaal were both perfect in their roles. I am really looking forward to the rest of the season!

After seeing the commercials I failed to see how they are going to keep this going for very long. Hulu and it's sponsors were really pushing it last month.

Anyone remember "Whoops!"?

The post-apocalyptic comedy genre was tried once before and the results were predictably apocalyptic.

Well, I feel like they have already ran out of ideas with the show. Like, really seriously, where can they go from here? You can only do so many funny things with 2 characters. (Heck, I feel like the reason they introduced a 2nd character is because they ran out of ideas of what to do with one character).

Likely, they will just progressively introduce more and more characters until the whole original idea is totally lost.

So if something doesn't work the first time, screw trying again? Gotcha.

An intelligent person would be able to recognize the inherent problems in a genre with such a small cast, such a limited setting and the difficulty of doing a "situation" comedy where the situation didn't change from week to week. They gonna have a love triangle? New job? Noisy neighbors? Kids flunking out in school? Maybe it didn't fail because it was a good premise done badly, maybe it failed because it's a stupid premise that cannot be done well. If it took more than 20 years for somebody to try again I'm betting it's the latter.

You can't hold out much hope for a genre where by episode three viewers will be begging for Cousin Oliver to visit.

An intelligent person might realize there are smarter, more creative and talented people than themselves that may be able to carry on the entertainment value without succumbing to stale and played-out plot devices to keep eyeballs tuning in. Occasionally, new things are invented and succeed.

I expect nothing more than 1 season from this show. But from what I have seen, I think that 1 season will be rock solid. Is it the new Seinfeld (a show about "nothing" if you recall that went on to arguably be the most popular sitcom in history)? I doubt it. But as people cry over and over that "Hollywood has run out of ideas" I'm at least refreshed that they are rolling the dice just a little bit.

And for the record, they have 7 people listed in the cast for the season -- so obviously there are some "twists" forthcoming.

I don't understand how this show made it out of pilot season, personally.

would have been a great premise for a sketch on SNL, but I don't see how they make it last for an entire season.

I actually hated it. Not funny. And as stated previously its a SNL skit worthy idea, not a weekly tv sitcom wothy idea.

I do think it was a mistake to make the pilot 1 hour long (or two episodes spliced together)
They should have left it hanging in the middle. It got a bit long to watch for 40+ minutes straight.

Comedies never seen to work past that magical 22 minute mark.

Thought it was just okay. It lost a lot of steam after I saw that Kristen Schaal was in it. I can not stand her...never liked her on the Daily Show and haven't liked her in anything else I've ever seen her. With a different actress, I might have liked it a bit more.

Ironically, that's the point of every character she's ever played.
Hence why I think the casting choice was brilliant. She's supposed to be like nails on the chalkboard -- yet somehow endearing.

Just finished episode three (first two were combined). Must admit it's quite funny. Laughed out loud at the end of this past one. Without a spoiler I am thinking maybe he regretted that marriage 🙂

Well...he could always just declare himself divorced...

We'll have to see if maybe January Jones ends up being interested in swinging both ways...or maybe is just a lesbian. :colbert:

THAT would be sadly hilarious.
