Yeah. At least with respect to what it has become.

But here is my take on it:

[*]In 1986 it WAS revolutionary
[*]I don't know how "good" of a car the first model was, but they sure sold a lot of them
[*]The1992 exterior redesign was nice
[*]The SHO models were HOT for their time
[*]The 1996 redesign was a DISASTER and looked like total crap, I don't understand why ANYONE bought one
[*]The 2000 exterior redesign made it look a lot nicer, but they should have continued to update it and they didn't

there was no 4 cyl taurus since 1992.

Aw, come on.......you didn't like the "swoopy-doopy" design that it, and the Mercury Sable, brought to us??

you young pups weren't around when it was first introduced in 1986. it revolutionized the family sedan, which were boxes on wheels. It was the best selling car in the US from 1992-1996, and they only sold over 7 million of them in the 21 years it was built.

Ford screwed up letting the car fade to oblivion by not updating it to keep pace.

Actually, I was around, as I bought my Camaro that year. And the Taurus was quite a bit better looking than the Chrysler "K" cars......but then, ANYTHING was better looking than they were!!

That's pretty much spot on IMO. I hated the look of the Gen III design ('96) and the whole oval theme. The integrated climate control/radio introduced with that redesign also sucked. Gen II and IV both were good refreshes compared to what preceded them.

And don't forget fellas, back in the day this was the Robocop car

A 4cyl Taurus?????? What year did they use a 4cyl in a full sise Taurus? I could of sworn it was 6cyl or SHO Yamaha V8.

Edit for above post got there before me

The SHO was nice until about 40,000 miles later when they would spontaneously fall apart.

Oh come on guys, it wasnt that bad of an econo sedan.

Yeah it was.

Yea, it was a POS car, but for the poor man, it was an affordable large sedan that was reasonably reliable.

Ford must have been doing something right with the taurus because it lasted quite a long time.

no, not really, its later years were spent being supported by fleet cars sales.

Agreed. Sharp lines for the win!

This I'll agree with. Every other post has just been bullshit. The taurus was a decent car. I drove one till I got my mazda..and I'll never turn back.

i drove a rental last year or so, it was an ok car, certainly no worse than any other american sedan. Better interior than impala of the same year.

but yeah, it's a brutally competitive market, many competitors are just better overall cars.

If only the Dukes of Hazzard was still on the air. Old Tauri would make great bad guy cars -- "let's jump over the pond too... oh no we're not gonna make i..."

When I drove it, the Taurus just had nowhere near the refinement of japanese cars. Not as smooth, not as easy to steer, and also kinda sluggish.

the question is, why cant they make the taurus more of like the camry or accord? THe brand name is there, just make a better car and slap on the taurus name on it.

They did they just made two, one a little bigger and one a little smaller. The fusion and 500. They wanted to keep the taurus around for fleet sales for awhile.
