Last case and PS I'll ever need. Did it...got the Antec SX1040.

Purchased it online. Here. from EMScomputing. I also got two ball-bearing fans. The whole shebang was $151.42 shipped. Best price online, according to Pricewatch and my own research. Ironically, a local computer/electronics megastore is selling the just the SX1040 for $150+ tax. That would be $161.63 total. I got the case and two nice BB fans for ten bucks less. I just have to wait a week to get it (UPS ground...35 pounds ship weight...ouch.) No biggie though.

Yeah, the 300w PS would've been fine. But, this is the last case I'll be buying for a long time. With the 400-watter, I won't have any worries about stability at all. This is one sweet case. Not crazy about the drive rails being the only way to mount 5.25 drives (no screw holes on the sides of the chassis like a rail-less case) but from all the reviews I read online and what you guys said about the 830/1030/1040 (same case, essentially) the rails seem to work well.

With four fans, airflow should be excellent, and I don't have to mod it at all. The chassis grills that cover the fans are very "open". Unlike on my Antec KS282, which is a great case, but only has two spots for fans, that need to be Dremeled-out to be efficient. Didn't want to do the blowhole thing. My case sits in a computer desk (open in front and back but not much room on sides or top) so a blowhole wouldn't have been worth the trouble.

I had a hard time decided between the 830 and the 1030/1040. I'm not crazy about the door on the 1040, but it does have more drive bays and most importantly, a fan cage right in front of the HD cage.

Just thought I'd share. Now I just have to wait for Fall when I can afford a GF3. 🙂 Have a nice day.

welcome to the club, ive had my sx1030 for a few months now, i love it.

i wish i would have shelled out for the 1240 tho...drool. that thing is bigger than my cockerspaniel, heck, i could fit poor "Cookie" in there.

Congrats, that's a nice case. I just picked up the Black Fong-Kai FK-320 and a Enermax 430W for a new DDR system I am building. I like the fan duct for the rear exhaust. I was thinking of going with the Antec, but I really liked the design of the FK-320 better. Also, it's was well worth it for a nice quality 400W PSU like the Antec, it should give you more than enough juice now...and down the line. 🙂

Hey guys, thanks for the positive reinforcement! I took the plunge...you only live once, right?

BigBootyDaddy: I looked at the 1240. I wanted the 1240. It won't fit in my computer desk though, and my "computer area" is small and cramped. No room for a floor-standing case. It had to fit in my desk. So, the 830/1040 was a really nice compromise B/T a mid and a full tower. It's almost a full and should last a long time.

Insane3D: That Fong-Kai looks sweet! I really, really dig that 120mm fan on the rear! That should take care of all your exhaust needs! Dang, it could probably suck in small mammals that wander too close to the front vent! And with 430 watts, you are good forever!

See ya in the forums!

Inlucded fan grilles are rather restrictive. I would personally cut them out and widen so you can use some 92 mil panflos. I personally dispise Antec fans. They are kinda sorta okay, but Panflo's kill them.

Yesh, the Panaflo's are really nice. But, the Antec's were $7 each, they are ball bearing and I have 3 Antec sleeve bearing fans that have been running for 6 months now and they are just fine. So, know that BB fans are superior, I ordered these. Plus, I saved on shipping B/C I ordered from the same company. With four BB fans in this case, I doubt temps will be a prob. Thanks for the 92mm tip though. Maybe when I move to my Dual 1.5 Athlons, I'll need more cooling! (JK) 🙂

BTW its not the last PSU you will ever have toi buy, if you want to run a SMP athlon config or a p4 config 😉

TunaBoo,

OK, I'll bite. I know that this PS (Antec P412) is P4 compliant. I will most probably never build a P4 system. Rambus bites. Anyway, what I don't know is about SMP. That's multi-processor, correct? Why wouldn't this PS work?

460watts? Cripes, that's almost hair dryer power levels! I wonder if that's just for the mobo. You'd need at least another 150-200 watts for HD's/CDRs/cards/etc. I wonder if Antec makes a One Kilowatt PS/2 power supply? 😉

Haha what a gameboy....Ever compare noise levels and case temps ??
I guess you and Mr. Dremel should show your mods to the Mechanical Engineers at Antec. The boss will probably fire them on the spot and bring you on board..... Pfffffffffft

Poster ! Good case and VERY INTELLIGENT purchase......................

Hmm... Panaflo's a pretty much silent. my dual 120mm Panaflo's run at 30dB. It's also a well know fact that most case punched grills DO restrict air flow.

Ditto.

The guy can talk some smak, but I bet he has no idea how a Antec and a Panflo fan compare. The panflo draws less wattage, and is quieter. Depending on the model, it may not move as much air (I use L1A's which dont move a LOT). But, the idea is to move as much air as silently as possible.

If you leave your punched grills in you are suffering. My 92's are not only bigger than the stock 80's, they have plenty of room to breath with my widened holes.

So who is the gameboy?

dang! 130CFM! You have supports on your case so it doesn't blow over? 😀 I see that you have an acryllic case. You design it yourself? I was thinking about making one.

TunaBoo,

You are right when you say "most stock fan grills restrict airflow." 100% right. I currently am using the Antec KS282, which is a really nice midtower. However, it's stock fan grills are the "looks like holes drilled with a drill" type. They needed to be chopped out. Airflow improved dramatically. I think that Antec learned something before they designed the 830/1030 series. If you look at some REVIEWS of the case that actually have a good shots of the grills, you'll see that they are in fact very open. As open as they'd be Dremeled out? Obviously, no. Any metal in the way is more restrictive than no metal in the way at all. I'm no Thermal Engineer, but by looking at these grills, I'd say that the diff in airflow might be 5%. If that much. Prolly not. Plus, with four fans in a push-pull config, I don't think that airflow is gonna be a prob.

As we speak, the my temps (according to Via HWare Monitor) are 27C CPU/38C system. It's about 78F in my apartment (it's 97 degrees outside!) so already, with only two 80mm fans and my lowly 282 case I'm doing pretty well. With this new case, I'd be surprised if the case temp ever goes above room temp. Ok, I'll stop now. 😉

I don't think it was clear whether all Athlon SMP MoBo's would need a different PSU. The Tyan certainly did, but it also had a heck-uv-a-lota onboard componentry (2 NICs, SCSI, Video, Audio).

We'll see when some "lower-end" boards are released.

If you just look at the wattage draws, most 450 or 500 watt PS's can provide plenty of power on the 3.3V rails. However, the MB anand reviewed had a special connector to the board. It may be optional and not needed like the p4 "special extra power adaptor" I do not know eithr way.
