Laserjet 6P issue since connecting to new computer

I have connected a HP Laserjet 6p to the computer running XP Home after using it on an old computer using Windows Me. It prints fine as long as it doesn't go over a certain amount of pages. At that point the printer prints only single letters with seemingly no end in sight unless I power it down.

I have deleted the printer and reinstalled the drivers, disabled bi-directional, disabled spooling, changed the parallel port settings to support legacy devices, and to ECP with no effect. I'm running out of options here.

The printer memory seems to fill up but not release. 18 pages was a little over the 2mb the printer has... and it seemed to happen between 18 and 26 pages.

This didn't happen under Windows Me... any ideas?

It just may be coincidence that it happens between the number
of pages you stated.

Sounds more like a bad or sticky paper sensor (the 6P's were notorious for it).

Make sure you fan the paper before placing it in the tray and that the tray
is firmly inserted (with a little force).
