Laser Printers... New area for me guys, need some advice

Hello all, and thanks for taking a look. For as long as I can remember we've had a deskjet something or other from HP, also an epson here and there, as well as a canon all-in-one we tried which wasn't so great.

Anyway I need to purchase a new printer. I'm thinking about getting a laser printer, because the deskjet I have now, I have spent 4 times the printers worth on cartridges atleast. Only problem is, I know nothing about laser printers, and they require toner cartridges or something don't they? Well this printer is really for my mom and her office, This is what she was going to buy: http://catalog.hsn.com/prod-12678/ec/ec0060/hp!sf!dept/2025110/2025110.htm Its the Am900 from sharp, for $249...

Let me know what you think about this, and other printers please.

Also, she mainly does black and white stuff, but does print photos from time to time.

Thanks,

Riley

Definitely check the price of the toner. My uncle has a small graphics/publishing company and found a great deal on a colour laser printer from dell I believe a while back. The only problem was it was almost as expensive to replace the toner as it would be to buy a whole second printer.

What do you mean by "spins the toner?" Also what is bad about it compared to the alternative? And what would the alternative be? Thanks,

Riley

We use a Brother Multifunction B&W laser. Toner cartridges are $31.00 and last for 10,000 pages, for little needed color prints we use an Epson Injet. For our needs 2 printers is best. Check the toner prices, they vary greatly.

Thanks for the input guys, uhm tiap, whats the printing quality like on that Brother multi-function?

What he meant by spinning the toner is that actually four cartridges are located in a carousel. The toner cartridge move to a transfer belt unit one at a time an apply each layer of toner before the transfer belt applies it to the drum unit. Really the only issue with this is that this type of unit is slower. Back with the HP4500 where cartridges were in a carousel the cartridges were bad for leaking everytime the carosel made a revolution causing a very dirty printer too quickly. With the newer ones though that problem isn't an issue. You would have to pay a lot more for one that its 4 toner cartridges are all-in-one cartridges that include an opc drum in each cartridge. Also the printer would require 4 separate laser scanner units. I say go for it. These cartridges are easy to remanufacturer by professionals. So not many problems with aftermarket toners if its done right.

Do check the price of the toner. My HP which was worth $400 about 5 years ago requires $99 dollar cartridges.

Also, check to make sure the printer doesn't phone-home to tell the status of you printer to the makers.
I have read about printer that contact the manufacter via the software uesd to install the printer.
This maybe an urban legend, I'm not for sure.

The brother has 600 dpi, sounds low, but in reality it is crystal clear, just like a decent magazine. We really use the copy machine function more than anything. They are water rsistant and don't fade over time.
