laser printer smudges

I have a Samsung ml-1740 I've used for a long time. It works great except for this: I have refilled the toner cartridge a few times with toner I got off of e-bai, and now it's smudging pretty bad on the pages I print. So, I guess this cartridge has had it. My question is, will replacing the cartridge fix this problem, or is there toner in the printer itself that will continue to mess up the page after I get a new cartidge?

Thank in advance.

Are you sure it's not ink off of the rollers inside?
I have to clean my HP LaserJet rollers every few months or I get unwanted marks from the rollers.

Smudges on the printed page indicate a dirty fuser roller. Cleaning instructions should be in your printer manual. Cleaning is usually part of ever toner cartridge replacement.

The manual says that when cleaning the inside of the printer

"do not touch the black transfer roller inside the
printer."

is this the fuser roller?
How do I identify the 'fuser roller'? Is it in the printer, or part of the cartridge?

Thanks.

I know that you can't just keep refilling those integrated cartridges. The printers with integrated cartridges (drum is in the replaceable cartridge) the drum has to be resurfaced or replaced too. Quality refurbed cartridges will have any other parts brought up to snuff as needed. If there are other user serviceable/cleanable parts in your machine, your manual should tell you and tell you how to service/clean them. Manual should have a troubleshooting section too with a list of symptoms and possible solutions. Check the tech support pages on the mfr's web site as well for the FAQs for your particular model. I'm sure you'll need a new or remanufactured cartridge as a minimum.

Soundmanred is talking about the paper feed rollers. By not touching the big black roller, it means not to touch it with your greasy fingers which will really screw it up, but you can clean it as long as you don't touch its surface with your greasy meathooks... You should be able to find out how to go about doing it with a web search if your manual or mfr's web site doesn't reveal the procedure.

You can get a kit at most of the big-box office supply/computer stores that will have special sheets to put thru that will do a cleaning of the internal parts on the paper path as well as stuff to clean up loose toner - those come with generic instructions that may do in your instance.
