Laser Pricing System (bar code reader)

My mother recently remarried and moved up to an island and opened a Country Store. They have a register but no computer type inventory maintenance at all so they need to go through each aisle and figure out what they need more of.

Im a decent coder, still wet behin the ears but glad to take up any worthwhile project that I might learn from. I was wondering if anyone knew about implementing these systems and if it would be possible to purchase a laser upc reader, and hook it up to the computer and go from there?

Anyway, I have no clue where to start and would appreciate any help if possible.


PS Also if it would be fairly cheap to simply buy a basic program and go from there that would work well too

i have set one up before about 7 years ago for my schools library and remember it being very easy to setup using a computer and being that i was working on a school computer 7 years ago, i am sure the one u have will be fine

where to get it from with the software i have no clue though...

If you go to office depot they have POS (point of sale) software with scanners you could use.. most are < $1000
