back in college (early '90's) they had Sun workstations with mice that were ball-less and only worked on a reflective surface, were these laser mice?

works best on skin, perferrably your mom's bare ass. SOrry I couldn't resist. It works on any surface, but I recommend a mouse pad with some traction.

I use a regular old mousepad with my MX1000, no trouble at all.

I'm using my old mousepad and it works fine with a logitech cordless optical mouse.

The new logitech G5 and Razer Copperhead laser mice do not work on Glass surfaces, such as the Icemat. Some versions of the early release firmwares do not work on darker mouse pads, however this can be fixed with firmware upgrades.
