I went to a professional.
Sadly, that doesn't mean that much. Plenty of "barbers" have no idea how to use a straight razor, no idea what a proper stropping method is, or how to hone their own razors. Theoretically you're not supposed to have ANY irritation. My girlfriend got me a straight razor shave from a shop that specializes in old-school straight shaves right there in the shop, in an antique barber's chair. Great idea... but the guy who did mine didn't know what he was doing and fucked up my face for a few days. They're not supposed to be scraping off the top layer of your skin like an onion, and, again, there's supposed to be no irritation. It's all about a light touch, the proper blade angle, and knowing the contours of your own face.
Anyway, your problem is really the shadow itself? You have a beard shadow that looks SO bad that you'd consider laser surgery? Post a pic, man! I'm fascinated as to how bad it is.
If his avatar is accurate he's person of color, they often times have an impossible time shaving without irritation. My neighbor is half Spanish/half black. He's tried everything under the sun when it comes to shaving, and always came out with horrible razor bumps and irritation everywhere. If you tell him he's doing it wrong he'll laugh in your face. I guess it when it comes to shaving it really sucks to be a person of color.
Funny enough, single-edged razors are recommended for those who suffer from razor bumps. You're right though, it can help but sometimes you just can't do nothin about it...
Badger & Blade FAQ said:Ingrown hairs
A common problem with cartridge razors which use a “lift and cut” action. Ingrowns are hairs which are shaved too close and then do not emerge from the follicle, but grow into the skin, causing painful bumps. Shaving with a DE can reduce ingrown hairs, but many people are susceptible to them regardless of shaving regimen.

Good FAQ to read.
Come to think of it, I started DE / straight shaving because of an ATOT link to an article that eventually pointed me to the B&B website. Weird. 🙂
