Laser Eye Surgery....is it worth it?

I've been considering it (Laser eye surgery). I'm 24, woren contact lenses for 10 years and am near sighted (can't see far away). Mostly I am just sick of contact lenses & I hate glasses.

Anyways if you've done it, and you do not mind could you share your results. What sorta risks are there & is the worth the $$$.

Thanks for the opinions & help.

What kind of contacts are you wearing?

Laser eye surgery seems like a valid alternative if you only consider daily wear lenses...but with the latest extended wear ones, it doesn't make much sense to me to risk the 1.5% factor of complications when you can nap, sleep, etc., in your lenses, for more than a week at a time. The only real issue is that you can't swim with contacts as easily as you can with glasses....

I have -7x and astigmatism, and I can still wear my lenses for four days at a time with no problems. Other people with better vision (better than -6x) and without astigmatism can go anywhere from a week, to a month.

absolutely worth it

however, it's kinda funny hearin my friends (girls) who say AFTERWARDS how much they loved me in glasses 😉

but i still love it! bein able to see alarm clock is amazing!

ive been seeing a very good laser eye doctor for MONTHS. she says that my cornea is not thick enough. she says that my cornea width fluctuates and we have to wait for it to stabilize. well in the months ive been waiting my right eye has stabilized but my left eye hasnt. its really frustrating going in every few weeks to get checked 🙁 i was all ready to do the laser eye thing but apparently it's not for me 🙁

how did you pick a place to do it?

My father had it done several years ago (maybe 6) and loves it. He says his vision was slightly better with glasses but its definitely worth it for the freedom. His vision was undercorrected to attempt to remove the need for reading glasses (or at least diminish).

Yeah if I get it I will not have pretty blue eyes (colored contacts) for the girls anymore.
I take my contact lenses out every night, and use an all in one cleaning solution. If i do not get laser eye surgery I am gonna for sure switch to some sort of disposable contact lense.

I hate squinting to see the damn alarm 🙁
The only time I don't is after a rough night of drinking & I "forget" to take them out.

Hey, I'm 22 and got Custom Wavefront LASIK about 4 or 5 months ago, and I say it is DEFINITELY worth it. My vision without glasses wasn't too bad, and I even had continuous wear contacts that I could leave in for a month, but being able to see perfectly ALL the time without something in my eye or having to wear glasses is like a miracle. The procedure is so quick and painless and simple. I did a lot of research to choose my doctor, including asking eye doctors who they would go to. I'm in NJ, so I'm guessing it only helps you if you're nearby, but my doctor was Dr. Hersh, here's his website: http://www.vision-institute.com/ has a bunch of info about the procedures you may find useful.

good luck

Got a guy here at work that just had it done last week and today was his forst day back. He is excited as all get out. He had 20/400 in one eye and even worse in the other and now he is at 20/20 in one and 20/25 in the other. For the past hour he has talked about nothing but that and how glad he is that he did it. He went to a place that charged a bit more ($1400 a side) but the DR had done over 25,000 patients and travels to 3 different states to preform the surgury so he has glad he had a good reputation.

He said he would recomend it to anyone.

$1400 a side is nothing, mine was $5600 total. (got the newer custom wavefront procedure though) Some people say don't skimp when buying a monitor, well, REALLY don't skimp when buying your eyes.

I got LASIK done about 3 years ago- well worth it even though the prices were really high at that time. I went with TLC vision center here in New York area. I have no side effect of night vision loss or light sensitivity which some people may get, like my friend. Swimming in a pool, seeing alarm clock like the other guy mentioned, no more red impressions on my nose from where glasses would sit, no cleaning the glasses and worrying bout scratches.... It's like being reborn

FYI you can search archived threads ("LASIK") for several long threads on this.

I'm still not willing to trust it until the chance of "problems" is much, much lower -- 2% is at least 100 times too high for the only pair of eyes I'll ever get.

Whats the limitation? Can it be performed with ppl that have an astigmatism?

At the time I did the surgury they made sure I had no sign of astigmatism, I guess they weren't able to handle that. But technology changes quickly, there may be a solution

I agree, it will have to be like 99.9999% guaranteed 20/20 or better before I would risk it.

I had it done about 3 years ago and I LOVE IT! I had 20/300 vision and really bad astigmatism. It was all corrected with the surgery. I had 20/30 vision 10 minutes after the surgery was over. I have 20/15 vision now.

The only real problem I have had is, I have horrible night vision now. All lights have really bad starbursts at night but WHO CARES!!!!!! I can see the alarm clock any time I open my eyes. I can go camping. I can swim. I cried the first morning I woke up and could actually see everything around me.

It's so worth it. Really. I can't say that enough. Even if I found out that I was going to go blind after 10 years I would still say it was worth it.

Research your Doctor carefully. Do NOT pick a doctor based on price. Get one who has a lot of experience with the surgery.

Like any elective surgery, there are risks. You could go blind, obviously. If you follow your doctors instructions, you shouldn't have too much pain. I didn't have any. The only problem I had with the surgery was the whole Clockwork Orange thingy they put in your eyes to hold them open. It freaked me out badly. Well, that and knowing that the doctor was shaving the top of my eyeball off. 😀
