My employer has decided to send me to Cisco Networkers 2010 in Las Vegas this year!!!

This will be my first trip to Vegas and am wondering what you'd suggest I'd see or do while there. :) I've always wanted to go and am stoked that I'm finally getting a chance. I'm not a serious gambler but will visit a blackjack table at least once while there. :D

I'll be staying at Mandalay Bay.

Thanks!

The first thing I would do is a forum search for Las Vegas, and read the answers from the last 50 times this question was asked.

red square in mandalay bay has an amazing vodka selection, an ice bar, and some of the best continental fare in vegas. some of the central asian vodka get quite interesting, as they actually have flavor.

Thanks ElFenix! Sounds fun. I'll have to hit that.

Nah, I'm looking for some fresh advice like what ElFenix provided. What would you do in Vegas?

go play the BJ tables in the venetian, i put down $100 and left with $400 in 40 minutes

honestly if you want to have FUN and play BJ go to the imperial palace and sit at a Dealtertainer table, those celebrity impersonators are hilarious if you get them talking to the table and the table is doing well. Every time we left we had a crowd behind us because of how loud we were! Just don't let Whitney Houston or Justin Timberlake deal, they're way too fast and pushy

disclaimer: that was just one time, i handily gave that plus a few other hundred to the other casinos

my suggestion... since you're going on your employers dime... is go to the Cisco Networkers 2010 convention... you know... cuz that's why they're sending you.

damn mr. killjoy, if you avoid the annoying vendor booths that conference probably takes up a good 6-7 hours a day, and since no one actually sleeps in vegas, he needs something else to do to soak up the other 17-18 hours!

at least once go watch the fountain show at the bellagio and the volcano erupt at the mirage

Go to the old strip and just walk around - couple of free stage shows and a huge ceiling display. Fremont hotel is nice for gambling - I'd stick to that place if you're going to gamble as other places within the strip are a bit sleazy/run down.

New strip [walk down Las Vegas Blvd] - walk from one end to the other - Eiffel tower, roller coaster ride ny ny, the fountain show, M&M world, PlanetHollywood, etc. Mandalay Bay hotel has quite a few things to do inside as well.

If you want to see shows - I'd suggest pre-buying them at one of the many online discount websites

Don't eat at Pampas (in Planet Hollywood). Aweful aweful service and a huge disservice to the idea of Brazillian Barbeque.

The Crazy Horse show in the MGM is decent for a burlesque show if you're in to that kind of thing. The Ka Cirque-de-soleil show is very good, and I'm sure the rest of them are too.

There's a bar in the middle of the casino in Mandalay Bay that often has live music.

If you just want to get hammered, sit at a 3 Card Poker table and play that, as your money goes pretty far and they'll bring you free drinks.

Carnival World Buffett at the RIO. 30 different types of food with over 70 different types of dessert style items! :-O

The pawn shop from the show Pawn Starts on the history channel is pretty cool. Last time I went in they had a 20k rolex in the case! Just up the street from Freemont St.

Hash House A Go-Go is FUCKING TITS. They have massive portions of food and very delicious!

skimming the thread, most people's restaurant suggestions are shit. eat at Lotus of Siam, make sure to make reservations if this convention is a major event, and for god's sake don't order standard thai fair like pad thai.

for a nice strip dinner i'd probably recommend Bouchon. it's just as good as several similar places that cost 25% more.

Rent a car...drive to the Grand Canyon.

If you want to do the Grand Canyon from Vegas, you should do a helicopter tour. Otherwise, you're wasting a lot of time driving there through the desert.

Of course, I recommended this last five times someone asked for Vegas advice as well...

It always depends on what you want to do and how long you are going. Last time I was there it was for 4-5 days...so I wasn't up for constant partying like I might do on a shorter trip.

My day started out by the pool with a few drinks, then I'd hit up the cheap poker tables at the Tropicana (wasn't staying there...was staying at the Mirage). The reason I would head to the Tropicana was that it was much less "glitzy" than the poker tables at MGM and Wynn. You could play all day with less than $25 and walk away at the end of the day with $50. They served you full sized drinks throughout. After 6 hours, you've made a few dollars and gotten your fill of drinks. I'd then hit up a show or two and head to a club possibly. Good times.

Grand Canyon is a long drive, not that anything is wrong with that.
When I rent a car there I head out west to Red Rocks canyon. It is close by and cool. I would also drive down to see the south shores of the lake, Hoover dam, cruise on down to Laughlin.

Mandalay is a fantastic place to stay. How long are you going to be there? The Red Square is a cool little bar, and Rum Jungle has some good eats.

I recommend one of the Cirque shows, Rio and/or Bellagio buffet, and take a cab over to the Hard Rock some night. I've always had good luck there and the service - in my experience - is top notch. When I was playing, they'd keep the alcohol coming...which for me (back then) was important. :) Also plenty of celebrity sightings. One night I saw Dennis Rodman, David Spade, and Lara Flynn Boyle.
