Dumb. At first glance I thought it was actually made of Legos.

Its not, it's made out of a bunch of oversized Lego replicas.

That dude needs to slap himself.

Are these scaled up bricks or they still used actual legos?

PS. LOVE Legos...we have a whole city/train in the basement (easily few thousand $ worth of Legos).

But why did they go through the trouble of making larger pieces out of smaller ones? The X Wing in the movies didn't have those giant nubs. Should have went for a more realistic model, IMO

That is a LOT of money.

Work is nothing, I can do that and enjoy the time as well. It's the cost of plastic/legos (they are EXPENSIVE).

Curious how much it cost in materials.

Ummm no. They made it look like their "normal" version of the model -- the one every kid buys in the stores. It's called marketing. And, quite honestly, it's WAY cooler this way.

The even build the elastic rubber bands used as tension on the wings when they are open. And the knob used in the back to open/close them.

Brilliant.

Might have been easier that way to split the job between the 32 people assembling (i.e. 1 person builds standard sized blocks, another places them on the model).

Actually, what homerboy says is more likely. The even have the picture of the original model for reference. Insane.

$0 as it's built by LEGO.
Normal retail price per brick is ~$.10. So about $500K-$550K.

Even though I love LEGO, this model is incredibly lame to me. It wastes so much LEGO pieces, and the wings can't "X out" like the regular play model. I have the 9493 X-Wing Fighter on display at home. Thought about getting the new Ultimate Series X-Wing, but it's just too expensive.

Speaking of the price, I would have thought that the design patent on legos ran out long ago. Why isn't there another company causing some competition, resulting in dropping prices. Does it really cost that much to manufacture those little plastic things?

There are other companies that do similar building blocks. And they suck. The quality is crap. The licensing (I realize to some what franchises are sold doesn't matter, but to the masses it does) is entirely lack luster (somebody made Halo sets) and really, now that the parents who grew up with LEGOs are in their 30s-50s that's what they want for their kids (and themselves too)

Did I mention the quality of the competitors suck?

LEGOs are over priced no question. But they are cool as hell too.

There is competition but they are equally as expensive xD. Plus they're not nearly as large, Lego has the equivalent of a monopoly.

...and of course it is an X-Wing. :D

mythbusters did some pointless experiment making a giant lego ball to roll down a hill, based on some youtube video, the veracity of which they did not trust. The best way to do it was basically to construct larger identical blocks out of standard sized lego blocks than slap them together. a modular design model, like the Sears Tower.

there are. duplex are one of the best besides lego's and even they suck.

but heck you can get 2000 duplex blocks for the cost of 100 lego's
