Largest Heatsink and fan that one can stick on a socket A

My parents recently acquired my brother's old 1900+ Palomino and they like it save for one thing...the fan is LOUD. And when I mean LOUD, I mean VERY LOUD.

Now I'm in the library and there are P4s here (Compaq) that are dead quiet and this is what I want to acheive. Now I know the Palomino disperses more heat than normal...but I'm still wondering if I can acheive the same thing.

In the past (literally around 3-4 years ago) I paired up my friend's 2500+ with a panaflo and a AX-7 (its a copper heatsink..I THINK. I don't remember the model names) and he has no problems with it.

But my parents like extra quietness...hence my willingness to pay more to get them something that will acheive that.

Is it possible with Socket A, or have all the big heatsinks that keep things nice and quiet migrated to socket939?

Thanks!

The best, for $35 w/o fan is the ThermalRight SI-97A. Yes, it's not cheap but it's upwardly
compatable with all current AMD chips. VG HS ta-boot.!

For sinks w/80mm fan, look to Masscool or FalconRock(?) at eWiz.com or buyextras.com.
Many good'ens for <$12+ship.

Yeah, it's getting harder to find socket A heatsinks these days. I did find this one. If you've got the $$. :)

Haha... GalvanizedYankee beat me to it!

hmm yeah that might be the deal....

btw why did you guys reccomend an 80mm fan? why not 120mm? convects the same flow rate with a slower velocity....is there any specific reason?

as for getting a new fan...the heatsink itself is a heatsink/fan "thermatake" that whines at something like 5k RPM, because the material isn't anything special~ seems just to be aluminum without a copper contact to the core of the chip.

I have a Thermaltake 7CU+, I think I paid $20 for it. Swapped out the 747 engine it comes with, slapped a standard 80mm case fan on it, and I can't hear it over my case fans or even HDs, for that matter.

I've got a thermaltake big typhoon on my barton 2500. The BT is quiet at the worst of times, i'm thinking about getting a nexus to stick on 7v instead of the stock fan.

itse not just the heatsink. its the case, the power supply, the harddrives. if those are not built with silence in mind, your quieter hsf will only reveal those annoying sounds:p

palo can be cooled with most any current generation reasonably good hsf at low rpm these days. i'm guessing about 20-25 bucks aughta cover it. palos are hot, but tis only a 1900+. zalman or whatever should cover it, but as said, if the rest of the system is cheesy sh*t, its just going to show you the rest of the awefulness

nah the rest is nice and quiet...barracuda HDD, nice fortran PSU, and heatsink only videocard (Radeon9000 IIRC)...its definitely the heatsink/fan combo ;)

unless there ia ny opposition i'll probably plunk down on a that ThermalRight SI-97A and once it arrives see if i can pop a 120mm panaflo on it...

The SI-97A doesn?t take a 120mm fan. Even if you managed to fit one on it it was be largely pointless since large portion of the air flow would blown around the heatsink and not through it's fins. I recommend this NMB with built in thermal sensor.

For future referance there is a "Case & Cooling" forum for questions like this.

Edit for wrong fan

That would be a VG fan,*IF* the OP used it to suck air off the SK-97A or was able to mount it on the bottom side of the HS's fin area drawing air through. I would do the latter. I have 4 of those fans here. Two have been modded with a thermistor off the hub on extended tails. None are in use yet but I can say they are silent, just as the ad copy states. A very high quality NMB fan.

I'm using a SI-97A with a fairly quiet 80mm fan (a Sunon 50 cfm which is wired for 7 volts) and it keeps my heavily overclocked 4000+ very cool. I would get a low speed 92mm fan like this one.

Edit: changed link to better model fan.

Cost / cooling wise I think a scythe katana would be your best bet for silence and good cooling, most of the thermalright hsfs need high speed fans for best performance or don't work w/ socket A / 370 where as this is a tower HSF, check the silent PC review Here

Heck, if you let them these fellows will have you spending 30/40/50$$s. Pah! Use a Spire/Masscool (same company) Falcon Rock/Whisper Rock (Al/Cu) with one of these: Delta 3-blade .
