"Thread too large - VB doesn't like huge threads"

That's false.

http://forums.filefront.com/spam-forum/143538-longest-thread-ever.html

That's just the first example, I can find you more, if you want them. Starting right here on this very forum. Try checking ATOT further, or go visit VC&G, or...

Load times here are still pushing 10-12 seconds, which is what its been doing for the past couple of days. It does this every so often, then the whole forum crashes, some people see database error messages, the server operators lock the neffing thread (which isn't even the longest thread on the forum), and everything is still slow after. Normally, I'd say correlation does not equal causation, but you don't even have a valid correlation here.

We ran a thread into the 90k range, with the forum going up and down, just like it has ever since the FuseTalk to VBulletin conversion. The thread took a linear path upwards in post count, while the forum followed a wave pattern (think sine wave or something) of slowdowns and crashes - but somehow, it's concluded the large thread is the problem. 90k versus 6k; that's not even remotely close, so you're also telling us the forum is degrading significantly.

In fact, I've never seen a VBulletin forum have this many problems with the exception of XtremeSystems - and that was run out of someone's home, cared for by a single person. Now, this forum software clearly isn't perfect, but there's a lot more wrong here than just VBulletin and some "large" threads.

offtopic.com runs VB and has some simply massive threads and 10x the users AT does, ive never seen it have an issue either

Did you guys also lock KT's movie thread? Something is not right...

What is the justification with big threads and them causing the problem?

Yeah, that thread is locked. Not sure why.

I DO remember the "olden days" when the default Jan.1 birthday thread caused problems with Fusetalk...

We are aware of other vB forums successfully hosting large threads, and esquared even pointed out a 90K one to the PTB. This was the interim response:

All has to do with the database. Once we get onto our new DB hardware, it should improve things, I would expect.

Not trying to get into an argument here, but all we lowly forum flunky hall monitors know is that when the forums slow to a halt AND they tell us to lock "overlarge" threads and then re-boot, then things generally go back, more or less, to "normal."

I was directed to find and lock any "large" threads. I then pm'ed KT that he is welcome to start a new movie thread, and link to the old one in his OP. As I phrased it, the honor of starting a new one should be his.

Well, that's something. Thanks.

MOST of us realize that the problem is all moderator controlled...it's folks like Perknose who are causing the problem...or not.

😛

It sucks when "the powers that be" cause problems like this...then the mods and admins have to take the flack from the users.

(most of us know you aren't REALLY the problem...but you're the "face we see" of Anandtech forums...so you get the blame anyway)
