Can anyone help. I am thinking of buying a Asus memo pad 8 with external micro sd card.

My goal is to watch movies on it. The majority movies is FHD and 8 to 13 gig large. How do I know if the device can support a micro sd card capible of copy files that size and if the device can mount a 64g sdxc card. The info on the ME581Cl - 1B030A (Asus memo pad 8) is confusing and does not show if the kernal is compatible. It does say support for 64gig sd card.

Wil I be able to copy those lage files and view them.

Make sure your microsd card is formatted as NTSC or exFAT. Most cards are are formatted with FAT32 which limits your max file size to ~4 GB.

It comes down to if Asus pays the ExFat licensing fee. A quick Google tells me they don't maybe. I know Samsung does pay.

I also read that the sandisk cards are not always so reliable, so was also thinking of going with the Samsung Pro

Sandisk is my first choice in flash when I want reliability. I sometimes buy other cheaper flash though.

Why would you want to try and force a tablet with an 800P screen to play 1080P videos, just the shorter battery life it will have? You are aware that you will not be seeing any of these videos in 1080P, no matter what you try to force the tablet to play, aren't you? The tablet's screen has a maximum resolution of 1280x800. That is all you will be seeing, no matter what resolution you feed it.

Why so big. 13gigs for 1080p sounds like its barely compressed at all.

~50% is not barely.

With that said, a film without grain should compress to <10 GB most of the time, and that's with a very high quality setting.

Grainy films just take up a ton more space.

A: If it is hardware decoding (which it should be) it should be eating barely any more battery life for 800p vs 1080p. All of that is dedicated silicon nowadays.

B: Re-encoding stuff for different devices is a pain.
