Hi,

I've been due for an upgrade for a while now. I was thinking 'bout desktop PCs up till recently when I realised I might benefit from the extra mobility on offer with laptops. I'd like to get recommendations on which laptop to go for. Currently, I'm interested in the Dell Inspiron 8200 (yes, i'm a big fan of Dell). Anyone with comments on this or recommendations on other laptops I should be looking at? Laptops are slightly more tricky compared to desktops (cuz once u buy it, there's almost no chance of an upgrade), so yeah all opinions welcome.

Thanks

Hello,
Well opinions or suggestions would totally depend on what your budget is and what you want to use that laptop for. Plz post ur budget and requirements and I am sure lots of folks here will have some good suggestions for U.

As for me ... I have a Compaq 710US with a 1GHz Athlon, 256 RAM, 14.1 Ultra TFT display, 20 GB HDD and DVD-ROM ... works fine for me since I just use it for some minor gaming and watching movies while on the road.

Hope U can post what I asked for and hopefully U will get some good suggestions

btw ... I wanted a Dell 8100 when I bought my laptop, but that was out of my price range

Hope this helps

Sure you can upgrade laptops if you know how and aren't scared to open up the case. The hardest update is probably the graphics card but CPU and HDD is all possible along with the RAM naturally.

My recommendation goes out to the Sony GRX series. Take a look here

well...sometimes the CPU is NOT upgradable...usually though it is. Hard drive is easy, so is RAM.the 8x00 series from dell lets you upgrade your video card too...but BIOS support isn't garunteed. Don't get a laptop as your only system if you plan up upgrading everything in it later, because you're going to be in for a shock :)

Yeah, I'm looking at $2500. The dell 8200 kindda fits my budget but I've previously owned the 7500. I found the 7500 a bit too heavy...i'm just afraid the 8200 are gonna be similar.....

The 8200 is a great desktop replacement laptop, key words are DESKTOP REPLACEMENT. So yes the 8200 is going to be just as BIG, BULKY and HEAVY as the 7500 is. If you can live with that then go ahead and buy it, make sure to get at least the 3 year mail in warranty and pay with a premium cc (such as VISA or Amex) so you receive the free 1 year extended warranty coverage.

I would also consider getting an IBM ThinkPad T, R, X or A series laptop ... some of the best built laptops in the world. Some of these even include FREE SHIPPING, Integrated WiFi, P3-Mobile processors, CD-RW, up to 60GB, beautiful 15.0" LCD display, 3 year warranty and more!

I echo the recommendation for IBM. I have had an IBM T20 for over two years and it is a great machine. PIII 700 with a 15" XGA display. It is reliable and I have not had a single problem with it. I recenlty wanted to drop in a bigger hard drive and got a 30 Gig IBM drive, and I upgraded the operating system from Win98 to Win2000. IBM had all of the drivers available on their support web site and the upgrade was easy. The only negative the T20 has is a poor graphics chip, but very few laptops had the new mobile graphics chips 2 years ago. IBM now offers the ATI Mobility Radeon in some models.

Take a look at their line of laptops at
