Hi there, I am from the UK and will be in New York for a week next week and will like to purchase a Toshiba laptop.

I am just wondering where is a good place to purchase that is honest, and good value for money.

Big chains are good.

Also, can i claim any tax ?

many thanks

Not exactly sure where you're goign to be, but J and R Music and Computers has been a good online seller for me. I think they have a B&M storefront as well: LINK

I've only dealt with them as an online dealer, but they've always had decent prices and good customer service.

it is a 2 pin plug right?

i can easily use a convertor to plug into a wall, however, is it a 110/220 volt?

Do i need a transformer or that sort in order for it to work?

many thanx

You need a converter ($3), but you don't need a VOLTAGE converter ($30) because laptops are made to run on either voltage.

You might want to try to get a laptop at a different location... Maybe if you are in another city for a few hours you can go out and find a computer store.

Still, the BEST bet would be to buy online from Dell.com or somewhere... but since you need it next week you are kinda limited.

the problem is that you will most likely NOT get an international warranty. so if it breaks, you are out of luck, or have to come back here to get it fixed.

thanks guys for the great input..you are really very helpful

i just called up J and R Music and Computers and they informed me that it is a domestic warranty.

I think i may have better luck buying in Asia where they provide international warranty for laptops..thanks guys!!

UK is just overpriced!!!

as far as warranties, you can get 3rd party warranties. go to a store that sells used computers and ask if they can do it. they will mostly likely ask to keep the laptop for a day or so to make sure it runs like it should and will warranty it for a small amount (local store will warrenty a $1200 machine for 100 bux). but i would say screw the warranty, they are too limiting. get insurance thru you car/home insurance company. most companys you can take out a special policy for laptops. for me thru state farm insurance, i ahve car and home with'em, it cost 30 bux to insure a $3000 system for a year. covers everything from theft to you dropping to spilling pop on the keyboard. having a laptop without insurance is just plan stupid IMHO.

EDIT: also, fyi, that local store with the warranty is with a national company so can be warrantied anywere in the US. not sure if UK will have similar company, but i'm willing to bet they do. :)
