Laptops in class

I am wondering how many folks actually get to use laptops in college classrooms. Last I heard, it was frowned on by most profs. Still true?
 
Frowned upon by most of my teachers - my programming teacher will not even let them be used in class. Outside of computer classes - the typing is annoying.
 
I have only ever had one prof say that they were not allowed. I LOVE using a laptop in lower level lecture pit classes (especially when there is a net connection). It allows me to pull images/diagrams of the net to insert into my notes. Unfrtunately, my majors do not allow for much lecturing. Most of my classes are generally more discussion/hands on. I figure if that I get less than one page of notes (handwritten) out of a class, it is not worth it.
 
I've never heard of a professor complaining either...

I voted for "I chose not to use one" but its more like, "I don't have one"

Cheat how? They are frowned upon because very often they are disruptive. Save for fan noise and the sounds Windows makes booting up and shutting down, the typing itself can be disruptive.
 
I use it for some programming classes when it gets boring....I don't understand why it would be frowned upon especially by a programming professor.

Must suck to be in a non-technology oriented school/degree program. The only profs I've had "frown" on it are stupid humanities teachers, and even then they didn't care.

I use my laptop all the time in all of my engineering classes, we have wireless just about everywhere. On the new engineering campus there are power outlets in all the desks and multiple wireless APs in the large lecture halls.
 
Only use it in boring classes a.k.a classes that I prefer to read up on my own but still have to physically attend because of dumba*s pop-quizzes/in-class exercises.
 
My professors don't seem to care but i'd say most of the guys who do whip out their laptops are douche's. Most of my professors post powerpoint presentations on the net that you can go and download after class, but there are always the douche's in class who whip out their laptop and type the powerpoint presentation the professor is giving when they could download it right after class.
 
It was never an issue when I was in college (1999-2003), no one really had any desire to bring their laptops to class. I did once or twice when I had to finish up work for another class, but that's it. There's no need for laptops in class, especially since most profs use PowerPoint notes and make them available to the students.

Um, you must be going to a strange college. Most profs do not put most of the information on the slides. You actually have to get more than the 12 words per slide. The slides are nice for graphs and such, but are often useless for notes.

my friend used an old thinkpad. we don't have many who use a laptop (two) but i'm in high school. guess it is more common in college. anyway, he would type everything cause his handwriting was illegiable. especially in history were my teacher would read us the notes and had to write them down. but the other kids ruined it. they fvcked up the I.G.C. and the screen just died. anyway, none of my teachers have anything against it, but we simply don't have ppl with laptops in my school.
 
Nearly everyone in my CS department has a laptop, and about half of the people in any CS class will be using a laptop.
 
I think most profs don't mind, but I only use my laptop in classes where the prof talks too fast for me to keep up if I write notes by hand. Usually those are the history courses where the prof goes through a lot of material in a lecture. Otherwise I'll just take notes by hand, easier to draw diagrams and such and less noise.
