Standby when close cover, hibernate after 20 minutes. I have a Dell laptop so standby really sucks. It seems that the longer the time since I put the laptop into standby the longer it takes to come back to the point when sometimes it just doesn't come back. I suppose its the Dell quality since every Thinkpad that I've seen had standby work perfectly.

I've never had problems with hibernate on the desktop. Especially with my raptor, the system comes back very fast, <10 sec.

Loads, but it's a Compaq so no surprise.

Well with my laptop it launches the CD in the drive again, and also if I printed something earlier, it'll reprint it once I come back from standby.

What issues did you have?

It spins up the CD again if I have one in the drive, but I usually don't. Never had any issues with reprinting or otherwise.

My only issue with laptop standy/hibernate is Mozilla. If I leave Thunderbird & Firefox open and the laptop is in hibernate/standby for an extended period of time, it literally takes like 20 times longer than usual to resume. This is a known bug over at Mozilla somewhere, such a PITA.

 That is also my experience and practice. I only turn my laptop on once or twice a week - it is intended for use when I travel. Otherwise, I turn it on to get updates and stuff like that. Sometimes hibernate forgets to wake up - not my choice.

I own two laptops, a HP and a Sony. The sony laptop had a weird quirk that when you come back from the standby or hibernate mode, the touchpad would stop functioning after waking the computer. The HP on the other hand, is brand new so i usually use it when i need to and then shut it off when not in use.

My Win XP standby mode works perfectly . . . I go in and out (you guyz have dirty minds) all the time and never have to reboot. I occasionally reboot just to "refresh" the system even though I can find no real need to do it.

I have mine go into standby when the lid is closed but go into hibernation after 20 minutes. Works perfectly with my Compaq this way.

I have mine configured to go into standby mode when I shut the lid. It's a Thinkpad T60. It takes about two seconds to restore from standby, and the battery seems to last very long with the lid shut. It's never failed to stand by or restore successfully.

You usually have apps open when you do this?

Yep. It works flawlessly. Why wouldn't it? The memory isn't more likely to get corrupted in standby mode. I haven't rebooted in well over a month, although I try to do that occasionally out of superstition. :)

Edit: I forgot to say that I never keep a CD in the drive, so I don't know if mine would spin up. I always keep a battery in the modular bay unless I'm installing something or ripping a CD.

It's always been standby for me ever since my first mac laptop.

When I use Windows laptops I usually shut them down unless I know that standby works well on that particular machine (some Dells, the Thinkpads and odd HP laptop that we have at work). I always close all the apps down though before I standby Windows - they cause way too many headaches if you don't. On my MBP I don't bother with that and just close the lid - even if gcc is in the middle of a run... it all just comes back smoothly.
