I just recently built my own computer which has been working great but I would like to be able to bring some of my stuff on the road with me now from what I understand building a laptop is a bad idea so I would just be buying a prebuilt laptop but I don?t now what I should get my budget is about $1000 to maybe $1500 it doesn?t have to be really good just for watching movies going over reports.
 
Could you be a bit more specific? Honestly any laptop made within 3 years with a DVD drive can do what you ask. Obviously you can certainly go with something well below your price range that can watch movies and go over reports.

What do you need in terms of battery life? overall portability? screen size? screen resolution? upgradability (don't count too much on it)? HDD space? DVD+-R? Build quality extremely important?
