I have a new compaq presario 710us (just bought it 3 weeks ago), and when i started it one morning instead of loading windows the screen displayed a gray status meter (like what you would see as win2k pro is loading), and when it reached the end of the bar the system would stop trying to access the hard drive and nothing would happen. It did the same thing when trying to boot in safe mode, and even after 2 reformats. i even tried deleting the partition and making a new one, and i tried it with a clean install of windows me instead of the compaq quick-restore winxp home bundle. I could install an os, but when i went to boot if it was winxp i'd get the bar, and w/ win me i just got BSODs. Whats up? Do you think its a bad HDD? I'd appreciate any help anybody can offer. I'd bring it back to where i bought it but i just moved to college and have no way of getting it back there.

thx,
Joe

Honestly I can say that the Compaq's themselves are a serious problem. If you still have the chance return it if possible. Second, try doing a clean install w/ WinXP or even Win98se. WinME is one of those things that got made then everyone stepped back and asked why they did it.....
