Hey all, I own a sony vaio laptop.

I was using it the other day in the office, and it was plugged in, when it suddenly shut off. I thought that maybe the power cord had gotten loose, that was not the case, I looked everywhere and could not find anything wrong with it on the outside.

BTW: My dvd rom cracked a while ago and just fell out of my laptop, so that space is empty now.

Today I brought it home and I tried to boot it up right now, aat first it gave me the recharging battery light, when I pressed the on button all the operating lights just flashed, when I held on the on button they stayed on for as long as I held the button down, but the computer didnt turn on.

My thought is that maybe the mobo is shocked because of the fact that the computer is open from the side where the dvd drive used to be.But I just looked in there and the area hasi ts own metal case, so its isolated from the rest of the computer, and I dont see how it'd be any different if the DVD was int here or not, as there is no connection between the isolated metal area and the mobo.

First take out all the batteries, and unplug it. Then plug in AC only and try to turn it on. If that still doesn't work you might want to open it up (only if the unit is NOT under warranty). Something could be loose or shorting out.

I got similar problem with my thinkpad. For a week it would shutdown randomly then it wouldn't boot at all, displayed some error message. Just got it back from repair, they replaced the motherboard so I assume it was a hardware problem.
Several things you may try in addition to what MWink suggested
- try to boot without hard drive (if you can remove it; I know that for some slim vaios in order to remove the hard drive you have to open the computer, if this is the case do not do it before checking if this will void the warranty, if the machine is in warranty)
- try different memory sticks (or if you have 2 in the machine try booting with only one of them)
If you still can not boot it could be a hardware problem.

(disclaimer: I am not a technician, just a long-time laptop user)
