Laptop won't boot!!

I got a laptop here that I'm trying to troubleshoot. It's a presario 2170CA. I got this laptop from a friend, which he bought in a lot of computer parts. I'm hoping to get it going so I can have a new lappy for University.

Here the scoop:

I don't get any video on the screen and it won't boot.

1. I press the power button and you hear the cpu fan start and then it just stops. The activity light goes on and then just stops when the cpu fan stops.

2. I believe it's getting power because the charging light comes on when I have plugged in.

3. It has Ram, and a Hard drive. Although I don't know the condition of them.

CPU or MoBO dead?

Any help would or ideas would be great!!!

Sometimes laptops get jarred and it loosens thre hard drive. I had this problem once. Try opening the hard drive compartment and tighten the hard drive.

I've seen this problem(or a very similar looking one) on some of the Dell boxes that came in for service. As these were all under service contract, we just had Dell send us new mainboards, which fixed the problem. I'm sorry to give the answer that you probably didn't want to hear; but I've no idea how one would fix this problem without swapping out big chunks of the system(one of my personal laptops is sitting on my desk in pieces for this very reason as I type this). Best of luck.

sounds almost like it could be a loose cpu cooler fan... and some safeguard shuts it down if the fan jams or the sensor is faulty... check that too... its cheaper than a mobo fix...

You really think its a dead mobo 🙁? Is there anyway I can find if by anychance it might just be the CPU??

Well I just I took a part the laptop and I found something interesting.

Should there be something to lock the cpu in place like a lever. The cpu moves loosely in the socket (just a tiny bit). Does this look like a proper AMD cpu socket?? just by looking at the socket there is no way I could tell how to seat the CPU in it? There are no arrows. It looks like something might be broken on the left side of the socket, where cpu would lock in.

See the picture.

What do you guys think?

PROGRESS!!

I locked the CPU in the socket and it powers on, and the fan stays running, but still nothing on the display. All of the lights are on and I can open the cd-rom. The cpu looked like it had a little nick on the face where the heat gets displaced?

Could this be a dead CPU?
What should I try next???

Well I tired the laptop 2200+ athlon cpu in my desktop ( Asus a7n8x-e) mobo and it wouldn't boot. Same thing happend on my desktop as the laptop. It runs, but there is nothing on the screen.

I thinking I should get a new cpu! Finding the same one is going to be hard!

Batch / Stepping number: AXMH2200FQQ3C AIUHB 2200+

Compaq specs on the CPU:

322322-001, $409.00
Mobile AMD Athlon XP2200+ processor - 1.80GHz 45Watt (266MHz FSB ) CPU with PowerNow Technology 256 KB internal L2 cache

Where could I find a cpu like this :s
What a joke $409.00!!
