Anyone know of any laptops that support really good hardware raid? I am also looking for the capability to have 8GB+ ram, an i7 quad, and 2 or 3 drives.
Why would you want to use RAID 0 on a laptop? There is a greater risk with all the moving around of the laptop that a HD could fail, making you lose all your data. Doesn't seem like a good idea, IMHO.
Buy an intel SSD is you really want better performance.
A hardware RAID requires 2 or more drives. Not many lappies have that. I can't see where RAID will buy you anything noticeable in your work. RAID 0 is truly a loser for a laptop. Your performance quest reminds me of Don Quixote de la Mancha.
With SSD there is much less risk of a drive failing. I have 2 drives that are rated for 250/200 each but in RAID 0 I am only getting about 200 read. So I have a feeling it is a controller problem/bottleneck.
If I am pushing what the laptop can handle with this less expensive drive, then the Intel one doesnt make sense.
The Alienware M17x that I have currently has 2 drive bays with 2 SSDs.
It is not only for work but I do alot of movie encoding/ripping and virtualization and I do not like my drives being limited.
