This is a Toshiba Satellite M35X-S311 laptop with an intel wireless A/G chip. My friend got a bunch of malware/spyware/trojans. She gave me the laptop to clean and i have and am able to get online using ethernet but the wireless adapter does not seem to work. I assumed it was the typical winsock error when you remove malware but that doesn't seem to be the case. No wireless networks can be seen and when i open Toshibas own ConfigFree it says possible reason is the wireless switch is set to off however the switch is set to ON with an orange light on. Also there is the wireless symbol on the F8 but when i press Fn + F8 nothing happens.

any ideas?!

When you say "Wireless Switch", are you referring to the wireless antenna switch?

Also, have you tried running the Windows Wireless applet (under Networking) to see what it says? I'm not sure if Toshiba's ConfigFree is just a fancy wrapper for underlying Windows tools or not. Maybe it's something simple like the Wireless Zero Configuration Service not being on, for example.

Anything amiss in Device Manager? Did you check the Bios/setup to make sure wireless is on there?

Click Start. Click Run. Type in "services.msc" without quotes, and click OK. Scroll down the list till you get to the "Wireless Zero Configuration Service". Make sure it's ON and set to automatic mode.

Glad it worked. I'm assuming there was some third party software controlling the wireless at one point, and disabled the Windows wireless apps.
